The building maintenance department of Facilities and Services is actively seeking a dedicated individual to step into the role of Maintenance Services Manager, where you’ll play a vital role in leading various projects and maintenance efforts while fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence. At South Dakota State University (SDSU), we take pride in maintaining a safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing campus environment for our students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Job Responsibilities:  Maintenance Services Manager will manage small construction, repair, maintenance, and renovation projects. The position will oversee the operations of the Carpentry and Maintenance & Paint groups. In addition, the position will assist with and manage special department projects and coordination activities, facilitate intradepartmental collaboration, and act as customer service specialist.
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 
Knowledge of:  
  • Construction management practices;
  • Basic accounting principles, cost estimating, contracting, and procurement procedures;
  • Facility management and operations including repair and maintenance practices;

 
Skill & Ability to
  • Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and customer service skills that enhance working relationships and cooperation with a diverse groups of people such as faculty members, administrators, contractors, maintenance and accounting staff, etc.;
  • The ability to lead meetings and manage multiple stakeholders with competing priorities;
  • Be organized, detailed, and results oriented;
  • Demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills and initiative with the ability to exercise sound judgment and make good decisions based on the best interests of various priorities;
  • Ability to read and interpret project plans, specifications, and technical documents;
  • Ability to process a high volume of information, conflicting information, and competing priorities;
  • Ability to work to independently, gather and interpret data needed to make decisions or recommendations; and
  • Work proficiently with computers and in basic applications (email, MS Excel, MW Word, PDF editors) and ability to learn other programs.

 
Preferred Education:
  • 2 year associates degree in building trades, construction management, or similar.

 
Preferred Experience:
  • 6 years of facility management/operations experience and/or building construction/repair/maintenance management experience; and
  • 4 years of supervisory experience including leading teams.

 
Required License:
  • Valid driver’s license.

 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 6 years supervisory experience;
  • At least 8 years managing renovation, repair, or remodel projects including preparing cost estimates;
  • At least 4 years experience with facility management and operations;
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, architecture or similar;
  • Experience preparing budgets, reports, and schedules;
  • Experience leading unplanned/emergency operations/responses;
  • Experience strategizing operational performance; and
  • Knowledge of building codes, fire and safety codes/requirements.
