JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State Applied Research Laboratory is searching for a full time Maintenance Mechanic to join their team. Duties include:

  • Perform a variety of ordinary carpentry work on buildings to install, maintain, and/or repair such items as walls, partitions, drywall, paneling, woodwork, ceilings, doors, window glass, shelving, etc. Inspect, repair, adjust and install door hardware such as locks, latches, panic hardware, etc.
  • Layout and install floor coverings such as carpet, carpet padding, asphalt and floor tile
  • Mix concrete for patchwork and/or masonry repairs to curbs, walks, catch basins, walls, etc.
  • Pour and finish same
  • Prepare for painting by cleaning, scraping, sanding, taping joints, applying fillers, spackling wall surfaces, applying primer coats, etc.
  • Paint both interior and exterior surfaces
  • Perform routine repairs to electrical, and mechanical equipment such as replacing switches, receptacles and ballasts, motors; relamp inside and outside lighting fixtures
  • Perform plumbing repairs such as replacing faucets, elbows, washers, valves, fixtures, etc.; install plumbing fixtures, exposed water and drain lines, etc.
  • Patch leaks and make repairs to roofing; replace broken slate, clean roof surfaces, gutters, and drain of rubbish and leaves
  • Detect unusual roof conditions and report to supervisor
  • Sweep, scrub, mop, wax floors and clean assigned areas of building; clean walls and ceilings; wash windows; operate power cleaning equipment such as buffers, scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, etc., and various hand tools, as required
  • Collect and remove waste and debris from building
  • Perform regular and preventative maintenance on tools and other motorized equipment, such as adjusting and replacing drive belts, motors, etc.; replace worn or defective parts; lubricate and oil; replace filters
  • Maintain inventory of building and maintenance supplies; request ordering or reordering as needed
  • Move, remove and/or relocate furniture, equipment, supplies and materials; unload incoming materials and move to storage locations
  • Receive and check shipments against delivery documents
  • Assemble and install furniture, equipment, tables, etc.
  • Remove snow and ice as directed; spread anti-skid material including but not limited to cinders, sand, rock salt, and ice-melt on steps, walks, roadways, and parking areas
  • Assist higher graded mechanic in more complex mechanical and building maintenance as required
  • Operate University vehicle as required
  • Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools in good working order

Job Requirements: Requires the use of shop mathematics together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, various types of adjustable measuring instruments and the training generally applicable in a particular or specialized occupation. Equivalent to 1 to 3 years applied trades training. Over 1 year up to and including 3 years of effective experience.

Work Schedule: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Days Off: Saturday, Sunday

U.S. citizenship required. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation. Employment with the Applied Research Laboratory will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.

NOTE: THIS POSITION REQUIRES THAT YOU OPERATE A MOTOR VEHICLE AS A PART OF YOUR JOB DUTIES. A VALID DRIVER`S LICENSE AND SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF A MOTOR VEHICLE RECORDS CHECK WILL BE REQUIRED IN ADDITION TO STANDARD BACKGROUND CHECKS.
