Maintenance Mechanic for the Central Heating Plant (Apprentice, Level 1 or Level 2)

 

Brigham Young University's Central Heating Plant operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. Residing within the Central Heating Plant, our co-generation facility produces both electricity and high temperature hot water (HTHW is 400°F @ 300PSI). HTHW is distributed throughout campus via a closed loop system to provide buildings with heat, domestic hot water, and steam. For locations where our HTHW cannot reach, we operate and maintain an additional 60 auxiliary boilers. In addition to heat and electricity, the Central Heating Plant also provides water treatment for campus heating and cooling systems and ensures the water quality of our swimming pools, therapy pools, and spas.

What you'll do in this position: 

 

  • Work as part of a team to help fulfill our responsibilities to ensure the safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant operation of the Central Heating Plant (CHP) power generation turbine, boilers, and supporting equipment. 
  • Provide an uninterrupted flow of high temperature hot water (HTHW) to all the University's buildings for heating, steam, and hot water services. 
  • Regularly inspect equipment and perform basic troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance as required. 
  • Perform installation, service, repair, and / or replacement of all HTHW system piping, valves, pumps, boilers, exchangers, steam generators, air compressors, and a variety of other supporting equipment.
  • Have a basic understanding of the operational concepts of natural gas, fuel oil fired boilers, hydronic heating systems as well as that of electrical generation and heat rejection of a natural gas fired turbine allowing for an uninterrupted delivery of electrical power.
  • Respond to unscheduled daily events to support campus community.
  • Respond to afterhours emergencies for 1-week periods multiple times per year.
  • Coordinate and work with subcontractors and inspectors.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the turbomachinery, boilers, and other related facility equipment (start/stop equipment, sequence major equipment, perform normal operational checks).

 

What qualifies you for this role:

 

Required

 

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU 
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license for day and night driving
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and fundamental troubleshooting abilities

 

Preferred

 

  • Experience with industrial maintenance, mechanical equipment repair, or equivalent trade school education.
  • Proficiency in welding and in light fabrication.

The starting salary could be higher if a candidate's years of experience and education is higher than typical.
