The Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is a research unit at the University of Washington. Our research expertise is in ocean physics and engineering, ocean and medical acoustics, polar science, environmental remote sensing, and signal processing. We conduct research and development that is sponsored by a variety of federal and state agencies, and take great pride in our long-standing status as a US Navy-designated University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). APL is seeking to hire a Full-Time Maintenance Mechanic 2 position (Fixed Duration). This position is expected run for a total length of 12 months in duration.

Our ideal candidate will be a jack-of-all-trades, with in-depth knowledge of maintenance procedures and basic tools and appliances. To excel in this position, you must be an outstanding problem-solver with exceptional communication and organizational skills.

•     Performs routine maintenance, repair and troubleshooting projects across various APL facilities and on the APL vehicle fleet.
•     Completes work orders in a timely and efficient manner and communicates completion of work order to the requestor and/or Lead.
•     Identifies potential maintenance and safety problems and notifies Lead of such hazards of and recommends or completes repairs as appropriate.
•     Utilizes safe work habits and maintains work area in an orderly manner.
•     Maintain materials handling equipment such as pallet jacks, power doors, loading dock boards, scissor lifts, carts and hand trucks.
•     Conduct periodic quality checks on equipment and systems to ensure everything is up to standard.
•     Skilled at maintaining and organizing Facilities Team storage and supplies.  Inform Supervisor when supplies need to be restocked.
•     Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

A typical day might include the following tasks:

•     Independently performs building maintenance tasks, including hallway and office painting, minor carpentry and remodeling, and changing interior and exterior light bulbs. Advanced maintenance will be scheduled for Physical Plants expertise.
•     Performs maintenance, operation, and repair of electrical, mechanical and structural systems of buildings as requested.  Repairs windows, doors, floors and floor coverings, painted surfaces, and install and repair simple to moderately complex electrical devices.
•     Plans and schedules repairs and prepares preliminary cost estimates.
•     Inspects facilities and equipment, identifies and documents issues. Maintains exterior property and storage areas including snow and weed removal.
•     Responsible for the installation of wall mountings, fabricates materials as needed or consults with the fabrication shop for custom orders (ie, builds custom computer raisers, customizes wall shelving).
•     May assist, coordinate and/or work with other trades and crafts journey personnel as needed.
•     Participates in a variety of office moves and related activities, such as careful handling of scientific equipment (ie, skilled at using hand trucks, four wheelers, pallet jacks), and loads and unloads materials and supplies.
•     Ability to drive large box truck (~35 feet long), ability to operate a forklift competently, while safely driving a 16,500lb forklift.  May perform minor maintenance on vehicles, including oil changes, lubrication, fix and repair flats, repair lights and belts.
•     Prepares and organizes meeting spaces; removes or rearranges furniture for events or classes, as needed. May perform general cleaning tasks as needed.
•     Completes work orders in a timely and efficient manner and communicates completion of work order to Lead.
•     Performs vehicle and forklift maintenance tasks. Including but not limited to replacing light bulbs, checking and filling fluid levels, basic cleaning, inspecting for repair. Handle higher level maintenance tasks, and escalated more complex issues to a higher-level mechanic or scheduled for UW Fleet Services expertise.

Position Requirements:

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a journey worker, OR full-journey status in a union; OR four years' applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Additional Requirements:

• Capable of lifting 50lbs.
• Ability to perform demanding physical labor.
• Valid WA driver's license.
• Observant, self-starter.  Someone who looks for the issue/problem that needs to be addressed before the issue/problem is found and reported by staff.
• Ability to independently or as part of a team to see a project through to completion.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Supervisor, co-workers, building occupants, and the public.
• Understand and execute oral and written instructions.
• Bend, stoop, reach, and work safely from ladders.
• Work hours of full crew must provide coverage for standard business hours of 8 am – 5 pm.  Starting shift may begin as early as 7:00 am.
• Must complete appropriate University of Washington training courses as they pertain to the position, including but not limited to: Back Protection / Lifting Safety, Fall Protection and Ladder Safety Training, Fire Extinguisher Training, First Aid & CPR Certification, Compressed Gas Safety, Asbestos - General Awareness, Personal Protective Equipment.

Desired Requirements:

• Forklift driving skills capable of competently driving a 16,500 lb forklift.

Conditions of Employment:

•     US Citizen.
•     Maintaining a valid WA driver’s license and maintaining active certifications including forklift.
•     Capable of lifting 50lbs.
•     Ability to perform demanding physical labor.
•     Work hours of full crew must provide coverage for standard business hours of 8am-5pm. Starting shift may begin as early as 7:00am.
•     Skills in handiwork and competent using power tools.
