UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. Our teams can be organized into six main groups:  Asset Management, Operations, Finance & Administration, Real Estate, Campus Energy, Utilities & Operations, and Business Intelligence & Technology. Building Services Department (BSD) delivers Custodial Services to the UW campus that provides exceptionally clean and sanitary environments for students, faculty, staff, and visitors and manages the comprehensive Recycling & Solid Waste Management program. BSD is known for its environmentally-friendly green cleaning practices and proudly supports its staff through employee development programs such as: English language/writing classes, computer instruction and leadership training for motivated employees.

We have an outstanding opportunity for a Maintenance Custodian 1.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Clean and maintain floors, walls, windows, carpets, furniture, chalk boards; clean and sanitize restrooms/shower rooms and fixtures; empty trash containers; set-up and move furniture required for special events;
• Use power equipment and hand tools such as broom, mop, squeegee, buffer, polisher and vacuum required for the cleaning and custodial maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture; use ladders when required in work assignments;
• Replace light bulbs, tissue and restroom supplies; replace light switches and rewire lamps;
• Lock and unlock buildings; secure building when facilities are not in use by checking for unlocked doors and windows; report unauthorized occupants.
• Construct simple items such as door stops and bookshelves; make routine repairs to locks, floors, walls, ceilings; replace broken windows; clean and paint surfaces;
• Under direct supervision, perform minor repairs on electrical circuits, steam or water lines, plumbing fixtures, lights and partitions; clean clogged drains and sewer lines;
• May manually or with self-propelled equipment remove snow or debris from sidewalks, stairs, driveways, entry ways; mow grass; help maintain campus grounds;
• May operate motorized equipment;
• Perform related duties as required.
• Clean classrooms in accordance with established procedures and standard.
• Dust and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty wastebaskets.
• Collect all recyclable material.
• Follow written and/or verbal instructions regarding the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures.
• Replace/fill dispenser for soap, tissue, hand towels (restroom supplies).
• Replace Waterless Urinal Cartridges.
• Repair and/or replace dispensers for soap, tissue, hand towels (restroom supplies).
• Maintain/(minor) repair/replace assigned power equipment and hand tools and their components, such as wet- and dry-vacuum cleaners, restroom (deep) cleaners, blowers, steam cleaners, carpet extractors, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the general maintenance of floors, restroom facilities, walls, carpets, and furniture, to include:
o Floor-pad holders (floor machines)
o Squeegees (floor machines)
o Belts, beater bars, hoses, filters (vacuums)
• Maintain “wet-battery”-operated (floor) equipment; change out water in MondoVap (dry-steam) machines; change out water in Eye Wash stations.
• Assist in records maintenance of appropriate (battery-operated) power equipment use and water-replacement in Eye Wash stations and MondoVaps.
• Polish/recondition cement/concrete floors.
• May perform cleaning and related activities in areas within a reasonable distance from buildings using hand-operated tools or small power equipment (such as blowers and pressure-washers) to remove debris or sweeping sidewalks or stairs.
• May use shovels to remove snow; may distribute and apply de-icing chemicals and sand.
• May move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis.

Requirements include:

• Physical ability to do required work;
• AND one year of experience in custodial or general maintenance work.

Additional Requirements include:

• Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s License or a license recognized as valid by the State of Washington and two years driving experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
