This position is full-time and works approximately 37.5 hours per week.

Essential Functions


The Chemistry Department runs a fully functional machine shop.  Modern machine shop equipment includes a Haas Toolroom mill and two computer-controlled mills, one computer-controlled lathe and computer-controlled rotary table and an indexing head. The shop has constructed many of the research and instructional instruments designed by the physical chemistry and nuclear chemistry faculty, students, and staff. The shop staff plays a pivotal role in getting new research and teaching labs up and running, in so far as the mechanical equipment is concerned, as well as in the maintenance and repair of this equipment.   


Fabrication and Repairs

  • Operates the milling machines and lathes (including computer-controlled mills and lathes), grinders, drill presses, and various hand tools
  • Aids in the overhaul, repairs, and modification of parts such as stages, lenses, stepping motors, microscopes, and attachments
  • May perform or assist with soldering, brazing, welding, and spot-welding of various components
  • Repairs and modifies equipment, with instructions from supervisor
  • Aids in the fabrication of experimental lab equipment for the particular use by WU labs
  • May assist with certain aspects specifically for, or related to, sheet metal work and wood working


  • Ability to read blueprints, sketches, and understand verbal instructions
  • Communication skills to work with customers to develop designs
  • Aids with designs of experimental lab equipment for particular use by WU labs

Shop Business

  • Aids in ordering, receiving, and storing materials and supplies
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Proper documentation, completion of work orders, identification of time and materials spent on a project
  • Provide time and material cost estimates for jobs

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent of high school diploma and an Associate’s degree from a Technical College as a Machinist and 1 year of work experience with shop math proficiency and strong mechanical aptitude or equivalent of high school diploma and 3 years’ work experience with shop math proficiency and strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to operate various types of machinery used in the trade.  Ability to fabricate scientific equipment for laboratory use in a timely manner, using various metals, plastics, and other materials required for finished items.  Possess a working knowledge of NC equipment (operating and programming).  Possess working knowledge of Cad Cam software.  Possess working knowledge of MIG and TIG welding of steel, stainless steel, and aluminum alloys.  A candidate needs to possess and openness to learning new skills and excellent customer service skills.
  • Valid Missouri class E driver’s license or Illinois Class D license required.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate’s degree from a Technical College and three years of work experience.

Salary Range

The hiring range for this position is $19.18 - $24.47 per hour.
