Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
This position is with the Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence & Security (ARLIS) – a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) under the UMD Vice President of Research (VPR). ARLIS seeks to hire an hourly student machine learning engineer. Exceptional candidates in all areas related to the ARLIS’s current research trajectories will be given serious consideration, particularly those with experience in multiple areas. ARLIS is looking for people who thrive in an environment of significant project ownership and responsibility for outcomes.
We develop solutions to address challenging national security problems that enable planning and decision making in domains as diverse as information operations, cyber operations, machine learning, image processing, and applied data analytics. We seek talented students who can work with a team to construct, implement, test, document, and maintain software applications that provide highly impactful capabilities for the special operations and intelligence community.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Working towards a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in computer science, computer engineering, engineering, or information technology. Other focus areas will be considered if the candidate has requisite experience.
  • Fluent in at least one of Python, Java, C++, C, R or similar
  • Experience in working with ML frameworks, libraries, and packages (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Pytorch, OpenCV, pandas, or spaCy)
  • Experience working with some version control system (e.g., git, DVC)
  • Experience in multi-tasking and coding projects through professional, internship, school, extracurricular, and volunteer activities
  • Strong communications, presentation, and writing skills
  • US citizenship required; must have the ability to obtain and maintain a US Government Security Clearance

Preferences:
  • Experience working in the cloud (AWS at minimum) or ability to learn quickly
  • Experience in an interdisciplinary research environment, especially running experiments
  • Experience with agile workflow, automated testing, and continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD)
  • Experience with command line scripting (e.g., BASH, Python, Powershell)
