Description
I am seeking a highly motivated individual to join the UF DEER Lab and study Osceola wild turkey ecology. The ideal candidate will begin as a full-time field technician in January 2023 ($15/hr) to aid in capturing and tracking wild turkeys and then transition into a M.Sc. position beginning August 2023 (12-month stipend - (~$23,000, full tuition waiver, and health insurance for 2.5 years). The position will be advised by Dr. Marcus Lashley in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, University of Florida and is in close collaboration with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The field work will occur on multiple study areas in south and central Florida. Duties will include assisting FWC personnel with capture and affixing GPS radiotags to wild turkeys, monitoring hen survival and nesting and brooding success, and deploying and monitoring camera traps and autonomous recording units to measure gobbling chronology. Development of quarterly reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and outreach materials and media to support the lab is required. The student will have some flexibility to determine thesis topics based on individual interest.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: A B.Sc. degree in ecology, wildlife management, zoology, or a related discipline is required. The successful candidate must be capable of working in the field under strenuous conditions for extended periods (i.e., hot and humid conditions, exposure to biting and stinging insects, exposure to poison ivy, etc.). Ability to work alone and in groups. Strong interest in public outreach. Preferred qualifications: Excellent organizational, written, and communication skills. Related field experience capturing and tracking wildlife. Experience leading undergraduate research and authoring peer-reviewed publications. Review of applications will begin on September 30, 2022.
