Job Summary

Involves the oversight of Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) and Medical Assistants (MA) performing a variety of patient care activities, such as administering injections and medications, monitoring patients' blood pressure, changing bandages, inserting catheters, and assisting with bathing or dressing. LVNs and MAs are trained to work in all aspects of health care, and may specialize in certain areas. Work is performed in a variety of medical settings, such as hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices and home care.

This position makes a difference for patients in an outpatient care unit by providing excellent customer service, facilitating and ensuring the accuracy of the information flow between medical, hospital staff and departments to maximize unit efficiency. The LVN Supervisor functions in the outpatient clinical setting at all UCSF Health sites (Parnassus, Mt. Zion, join UCSF Health partnerships, Satellite clinics, or with UCSF Faculty at other off-site clinic sites, et al).

Department Description

A full scope of Otolaryngology services is provided, which include preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic care. Specific services include otology, neurotology, skull base surgery, head and neck surgery, sinus, general otology, wellness promotion, and patient teaching. Selected office procedures, (such as endoscopic laser, frenotomies, laser surgery to palate and uvula, mastoid bowl cleaning, taste testing, facial nerve stimulation, botox injections, myringotomy tube placements), are performed by providers. The most common diagnoses seen in the practice are conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, nasal obstruction, cholesteatoma, Eustachian tube dysfunction, maxillary sinusitis, frontal sinusitis, ethmoid sinusitis, phenoidal sinusitis and sleep apnea.

Patients come to the Otolaryngology Practice for episodic/acute care, pre-operative evaluation, follow- up of chronic otolaryngology problems, and post-hospital discharge visits. Patient needs vary from low to high complexity, depending on presenting signs and symptoms. Any patient presenting with an emergency medical condition is screened by a physician and provided with stabilizing treatment until the patient can be safely transported to the Emergency Department. The use of anesthesia, for other than local infiltrations, is prohibited. Patients may receive IV therapy in an emergency situation while awaiting transport to the hospital.


Required Qualifications

  • Clinical knowledge to effectively supervise LVNs. Skills to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with a clinic, center or practice.
  • Strong knowledge of LVN patient care standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations, and internal policies. 
  • Experience with insurance authorizations and interacting with retail pharmacies to refill medications.
  • Experience with endoscopy scopes and towers.
  • Detail oriented, with the ability to apply analytical and critical thinking skills to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and apply effective solutions.
  • Solid interpersonal skills for effective collaboration and problem solving with all levels of management and staff.
  • Skills in written and verbal communications, with the ability to convey clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Previous experience using and documenting in APeX (or EPIC system
  • Experience working in direct patient care in an ambulatory surgical setting; 5 years of Pediatric Otolaryngology experience required
  • Graduation from an approved LVN program

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources issues and performance, and to participate in decision-making on human resources matters.
  • Bilingual or multi-lingual capability (Spanish, Cantonese, Russian) strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems used in nursing units or departments

License/Certification

  • Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) License in the state of California
  • American Hospital Association (AHA)
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare providers (BLS) certification
