Position Summary
Position functions as a Licensed Practical nurse (LPN) in the department of Adult Psychiatry. This position will specifically work with our Interventional Psychiatry services which include Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), esketamine nasal spray and ketamine injections. Candidate will work in close collaboration with the clinic prescribers for training per department requirement. Candidate will assist with patient care coordination and patient related tasks, furthering our mission of providing health care in a way that best serves our diverse patient population.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Patient Care Duties/Communication and Documentation

  • Administers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) procedures per physician prescription and according to established protocol.
  • Administers specialty medication to patients and monitors patients in a controlled medical setting according to established protocol.
  • Provides initial emergency response and performs CPR when required.
  • Maintains Medical Records requiring appropriate and timely recording of patient information, including charting all procedures, and administered medications.
  • Completes and sends required documentation pertaining to patient’s treatment to respective agencies.
  • Interacts directly with patients in clinic setting along with virtual visits, and completes clinical tasks, which includes obtaining vital signs, and rooming of patients.
  • Assists with care coordination and patient visit prep by performing tasks outlined under the department guidelines, such as calling patients with test results, calling patient to update medications, health history, and social history, scheduling appointments, assisting with return calls; scheduling diagnostic procedures, and admissions, including scheduling of follow-up appointments and procedure appointments.
  • Assists providers with renewal of non-narcotic medications and completion of procedure authorizations per standing order, and department guidelines.
  • Assists providers with patient messages including MyChart messages, electronic refill requests, and telephone communications, which would include returning phone calls to patients or routing to appropriate personnel. Answers basic questions from patient/family regarding treatments, diagnosis, and procedures.
  • Assists with examinations, procedures, and lab tests.
  • Assists with completion of necessary FMLA/disability paperwork and documentation in a timely manner.
  • May administer medications under the order of physicians or nurse practitioner (this includes IM and subcutaneous injections).
  • Order entry in the electronic medical record, completes requisitions/orders per Washington University guidelines.
  • Prepares and maintains patient care rooms.
  • Prepares patient charts for visit.
  • Cross coverage of other clinic office staff as needed.

Equipment and Supplies

  • Monitors supply inventory, ensuring adequate supplies, equipment, or garments are available and that they comply with regulations.
  • Cleans and stocks patient care rooms and sterilizes patient care rooms and any instruments or equipment.

Other Functions

  • Maintains required HIPAA compliance, skills/competencies and participates in in-services, staff programs, continuing education, and cross-training programs according to established standards and Washington University policies.
  • Complies with OSHA, state, and federal regulatory sources/standards.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities to ensure appropriate clinical outcomes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of recent physician’s office or hospital experience.
  • Experience with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and esketamine/ketamine treatments is highly desirable.
  • Experience with prior authorizations is valued.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and telephone skills, working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, fundamentals of medical terminology, and experience/knowledge working with electronic medical records.
  • Experience assisting with medical procedures is valued.
  • Experience in working with patients with psychiatric conditions is valued.
  • Dependable, independent worker with strong interactive communication skills, with ability to professionally work with physicians, patients, families, significant others and support staff.
  • Working knowledge of general nursing theory and practice with ability to recognize and interpret symptoms/conditions, experience/knowledge working with electronic medical records and assist in emergency or adverse situations.


Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of LPN program.
  • REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Current LPN licensure in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois depending on location or received within 3 months from date of hire. Basic Life Support Certification required and must obtained within one month of employment.  Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements.

Salary Range
$20.17 - $30.24 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
