Living Donor Social Worker

Job Summary

The Living Donor (LD) Clinical Social Worker II (MSW) or Clinical Social Worker III’s (MSW & LCSW) primary responsibilities are psychosocial assessment, crisis intervention, counseling, brief therapeutic interventions, complex discharge planning, consultation, selection representation, education, community linkages, supportive services, and facilitating the plan-of-care through the health care continuum for patients, families, significant others, and staff, both in-patient and out-patient.  

The LD CSW is a dedicated staff member in the UCSF Medical Center Transplant Program who coordinates resources and services for Living Liver and Living Kidney donors.  The LD CSW’s role is to represent and advise the donor, promote and protect the interest of the donor, respect the donor’s decision, and ensure that it is informed and free from coercion.  The LD CSW does not have any contact with the liver or kidney recipients. 

The LD CSW interacts with all potential living donors during the evaluation phase and participates in donor selection conferences.  The LD CSW follows donors through the transplantation and post-transplant phases, including an immediate post-transplant evaluation. The LD CSW follows-up with living donors at 1 month and as needed, thereafter. 

The LD CSW will participate in the Department of Social Work and Living Donor Program education and practice improvement activities.  The CSW III has advanced clinical knowledge and skills, and is distinguished from the CSW II by leadership activities including participation in advanced program planning, provision of educational programs, clinical supervision, consultation to the clinical team, other departments, and the community.  

The LD CSW will provide social work services to any patient regardless of gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, social, cultural, educational or religious background, language, age, ancestry, citizenship, color, national origin, race, presence of mental or physical disability, source of payment for care, medical condition, marital status or status as a veteran.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

Dealing with an illness can be a very difficult time for patients and their loved ones.  At UCSF Medical Center, experienced and sensitive social workers in the Department of Social Work are available to assist patients and their families cope with the many psychological and social problems that may arise when facing illness, hospitalization and medical treatment. 

Our social workers act as patient advocates by serving as counselors, helping to find resources and solving problems.  Any concerns related to the psychological, practical and social well-being of each patient or their loved ones may be discussed openly with our social workers.


Required Qualifications

•    Master’s degree from a CSWE accredited school of Social Work.
•    Current California State License of Clinical Social Work in good standing (CSW III Only).
•    Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
•    Demonstrates resourcefulness, effective written and oral communication, diplomacy, and organizational and analytic skills.
•    Self-directed, assertive and creative in problem solving, systems planning and patient care management in a high-volume work environment.
•    Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams.
•    Basic telephone, and computer skills including the use of the internet.
•    This position requires the flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.


Preferred Qualifications

•    Experience working in a healthcare setting, including out-patient, in-patient and/or transplantation


License/Certification

For Clinical Social Worker III candidates only: Current California State License of Clinical Social Work in good standing
