Summary of Duties:
Collaborate with the Regional Small Farms team to provide educational opportunities and technical support for local food animal producers in Clallam, Jefferson, and Kitsap Counties. This position will work with regional partners to help promote efficiencies in production and processing helping producers, processors, and consumers. In partnership with the 4-H coordinator, manage and expand the food animal projects associated with 4-H in Clallam County. Positions assigned to this class are responsible for planning and executing programs that support the education of youth involved in 4-H food animal projects.
4-H livestock projects currently include beef and dairy cattle, swine, goats, sheep, poultry, and sometimes rabbits. Engaging with youth enrolled in these projects will include assisting youth and families in 4-H enrollment, scheduling meetings, public presentation, and record books, etc. Livestock projects will include but is not limited to education around housing, nutrition, biosecurity, showing, judging, quality assurance, etc. This position will also coordinate with certified volunteers to ensure Washington State and Clallam County 4-H guidelines are met.
This position will also be responsible for organizing and helping deliver educational events outside of normal club meetings including County events as well as helping youth prepare to attend statewide and national 4-H events. This position will work with local partners to ensure 4-H fundraising goals are met and assist delivering a safe and successful County fair and youth livestock auction including helping youth stay up to date with Youth for the Quality Care of Animals requirement.
Communicate effectively and compassionately with youth, parents, and volunteers. Design marketing, recruiting resources, educational brochures, posters, publications. Manage program budgets and apply for small grants as necessary. Must be team player, work independently and embrace a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends.
Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant extension program discipline and two (2) years of related program experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

  • A Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Science including but not limited to Animal Science, Agricultural Education, Agricultural Business, Agricultural Economics, Food Science, Meat Science, Poultry Science, Extension Education or another relevant discipline, Masters preferred in one of the degree concentrations.
  • The two years in related program experience must be in food and farms sector and extension programming, preferably both adult and youth audiences (4-H).
  • Must successfully pass the WSU 4-H Youth Development/Child Protection Screening Process.
  • Must be able and willing to work a flexible schedule including evenings/weekend.
  • Must have, or able to obtain, a valid driver's license by time of hire.
  • Ability to work with large and small livestock safely.
  • Knowledge and experience in teaching utilizing an experiential learning model (youth and adult audiences).
  • Experience developing extension and educational and outreach deliverables, including training and support materials as well as resources supporting the for the food and farm community in areas that will increase efficiency, improve both production and business practices and help to build consumer confidence in the local food system.
  • Areas of expertise may include food animal production, quality assurance, animal well-being, pasture management, nutrition, selection, meat science, etc.
  • Ability to teach workshops, facilitate meetings and evaluate programming efforts offered to diverse audiences that span both youth and adult participants.
  • Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be considered as a substitute for the preferred post-secondary educational on a year-for-year basis.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a team member with 4-H Program Coordinator, County Director, Extension Faculty, staff, and volunteers. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively using oral, written, and listening skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a computer and word processing, spreadsheet, and database software programs.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three (3) years of related program experience.
  • Master's Degree in a related field.
  • Knowledge of regenerative pasture management and food animal related climate concerns
  • Demonstrated cultural competency.
  • Knowledge and/or expertise in custom slaughter and butchery.
  • Fluency in Spanish.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a computer and competence in learning to computer programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to use social media to promote programming and competence in using social media marketing.
  • Experience and ability to work as a team member with staff and volunteers. Knowledge of, and/or experience with, 4-H youth development programs.
  • Strong demonstrated verbal communication and listening skills: public speaking, effective conveyance of program information to the public, program participants, and decision-makers.
  • Experience working/collaborating with multiple public agencies, NGOs, and individuals in partnerships.
  • Knowledge of, and/or experience with, program assessment and evaluation.

Monthly Salary:
$3,750.85 - $5,397.56
In accordance with RCW 49.58.110 , the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Successful candidates typically begin up to mid-point of the salary range. This is a temporary position expected to end on February 1, 2025. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment. Funding has been renewed successfully for several years and we expect funding to continue to be renewed.
