The department engages in significant grant work focused on preparing educators to serves as agents of educational equity and change.  

Faculty in Residence in the Department of Teaching and Learning have established records of teaching and service that focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in PreK-12 and community-based educational spheres. We aim to recruit applicants who will provide impactful instruction and emphasize training undergraduate and graduate students to become productive and thoughtful scholar-practitioner leaders. The UNLV Department of Teaching and Learning programs includes Bachelor degrees in Education, Master of Education and Master of Science degrees, an Educational Specialist degree, a Doctorate of Education, as well as two Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Curriculum & Instruction and Teacher Education. Program delivery includes face-to-face, online, remote, and hybrid formats. Qualified applicants should be prepared to contribute to the teaching mission of the Department of Teaching and Learning at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. 

ROLE of the POSITION 

The Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, seeks a faculty member to join the Literacy (Art Education, Visual Literacy, and Visual Culture) program at the rank of Assistant Professor-in-Residence. This position is a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure-track, promotable position. Responsibilities include teaching 12 credit hours per semester (four courses per semester or the workload equivalent), and engaging in departmental, college, university, and/or professional service. This individual will be responsible for literacy, visual culture, and art education courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supporting educator licensure-related coursework, enhancing graduate student research through coursework and serving on graduate committees, serving as an artist-in-residence for the Gayle A. Zeiter Literacy Center, as well as developing and/or maintaining collaborative relationships between the Department of Teaching and Learning and the Department of Art, PK-12 schools, and the southern Nevada community at large. Courses will emphasize art education, visual culture, as well as interdisciplinary approaches to literacy, language, and culture.  

Professors-in-Residence serve in a primarily teaching and service capacity, with expectations to participate in all areas of department and program governance, to support and advise undergraduate and graduate students as they progress through their respective programs, and to engage in other university, community, and professional service initiatives as relevant. The successful candidate is expected to seek and engage in external funding opportunities to support teaching and community initiatives related to PK-12 education. Additionally, the successful candidate will support the program area, department, and college through administrative duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

This position requires a terminal degree (doctoral or masters in Fine Arts) in in a field intersecting Art, Visual Culture, and Visual Literacy, with an emphasis in visual culture and interdisciplinary approaches to education from a regionally accredited college or university.  The following experience is required: (a) higher education teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels focused on visual literacy and/or art education; (b) professional teaching experience in K-8 schools; (c) experience preparing preservice teachers for diverse K-8 contexts; (d) knowledge of current research and methods related to literacy, art education, and visual culture; (e) a demonstrated knowledge of education inequities and other challenges faced by underrepresented and marginalized populations; (f) a highly collaborative collegial disposition characterized by a willingness to be fully present with students, faculty, and students; and (g) demonstrated capacity to engage substantially in local/state/regional service initiatives related to visual literacy with an emphasis on visual culture. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

The following additional candidate attributes are highly desired:  

  • Experience serving as artist-in-residence within educationally related settings or organizations; 

  • Experience preparing preservice teachers for culturally diverse contexts, working collaboratively with K-8 school partners, and designing curriculum for diverse populations; 

  • Experience advising and a demonstrated commitment to the academic success of Students of Color, especially those from underserved/underrepresented groups; 

  • Web-based teaching experience in higher education; and 

  • Knowledge or experience collaborating with community-based art and visual culture and engaging educators in those collaborations. 

  • Capacity to seek and engage in external funding opportunities to support teaching and community initiatives related to PK-12 and community-based literacy. 

SALARY RANGE 

Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. Position is contingent upon funding.
