Purpose

Primarily providing computer Linux support for the Chandra Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering to meet academic, research, and administrative needs for the department and organized research organizations within the department.


Responsibilities

  • Linux installation, configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, for end-user network connected workstations, servers, laptops, virtual servers, peripherals, and containers

  • Administer academic and research computers, network-based devices, and other diverse equipment, including OS imaging, system patching, package deployments, incident resolution and change management

  • Manages deployments, maintenance, licensing, and performance of engineering/scientific software applications on servers and end-user computer systems

  • Administer system services including DNS, SSSD, samba, NFS, NIS, LDAP, or other

  • Manage Linux accounts, home/working directories, groups, permissions, quotas, and file shares

  • Perform computer systems audits for compliance with established information assurance policies and configuration guidelines

  • Occasional systems administration support of MacOS and Windows systems

  • Develop and maintain scripts and/or automation tools for installation, configuration, and maintenance of systems

  • Assist with evaluating procurement requests for hardware and software, along with managing a computer’s lifecycle, and inventory records


Required Qualifications

  • Education from an accredited college or university with a concentration in a related computing field.

  • More than 3 years of the experience providing server, desktop, end-user, and related IT equipment support in a business, enterprise, or higher education environment.

  • Experience maintaining Ubuntu and Red Hat Linux, macOS, and some Windows devices in an enterprise environment with a strong understanding of AD, GPOs SSSD, NIS, NFS, or other directory services.

  • Proficiency with the full spectrum of IT support from procurement, hardware, software, infrastructure, networking, to end-of-life processes.

  • Demonstrated experience in IT customer service and/or IT help desk environment.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Linux environments, services, configurations, package deployments, troubleshooting, implementing security best practices, system/user policies.

  • Experience protecting complex and sensitive user data.

  • Ability to work as a team member, take initiative to work independently, and embrace learning new technologies.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with a demonstrated ability to convey technical information to non-technical customers.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant computer field.

  • Experience with management tools: ServiceNow, Ubuntu Landscape, Ansible, Orcharhino, Puppet, Salt, SCCM/MECM, Jamf, BeyondTrust (Bomgar).

  • Demonstrated proficiency of Directory Services, Group Policies, and remote access tools.

  • Knowledge of full-disk encryption, TPM, network bound disk encryption.

  • Knowledge of storage concepts; local, network-based, workgroup or enteprise NAS/SAN

  • Familiarity with networking technologies and services (DHCP, DNS, TCP/IP, VPN)

  • Understanding of basic network infrastructure, troubleshooting, and utilization of diagnostic tools/utilities.

  • Experience supporting faculty, staff, students, and researchers in higher education

  • Experience with monitoring applications such as Splunk

  • Experience troubleshooting Docker containers and GPU-based issues.


Salary Range

$65,000 + depending on qualifications


Working Conditions

  • May work around standard office conditions.

  • Use of manual dexterity.


Work Shift

  • Flexible from 8:00am to 5:00pm.
