Position Summary
RENCI is seeking a talented individual for the position of a Linux System Administrator to support the activities of the Network Research and Infrastructure Group (NRIG) in continuing to deploy and maintain experimental distributed environments. The group develops and deploys hardware platforms that enable scientists to engage in cutting edge distributed systems/networking research.
The Linux System Administrator’s primary responsibility is supporting a variety of distributed Linux-based environments. Much of the infrastructure is located at other institutions across the US and the world. The position will be involved in daily maintenance, support and refresh/upgrades of the infrastructure including compute clusters, associated storage as well as datacenter and wide-area networking environments. Working with server hardware hands-on in a datacenter environment as well as guiding remote hands are part of the responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
- System administration of the distributed infrastructure. Maintain existing Linux-based physical server and virtual infrastructure. Evaluate, install, configure and support system software. Maintain on-site portions of the hardware (rack/stack/cable/BIOS) and virtual environments, open service requests related to vendor support, guide remote hands for remote infrastructure installation and maintenance tasks. Respond to tickets/issues as they are created.
- Develop infrastructure automation using a combination of Ansible, Docker, Python and other tools
- Document existing or new solutions for the use by the rest of the team. NRIG operates in large distributed teams and documentation and knowledge transfer are critical functions to projects’ success.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master’s or Bachelors and 0-2 years’ experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Applied knowledge of Linux system administration, system monitoring tools, shell/Python scripting, Docker, Ansible scripting, host and Docker networking. Understanding and ability to perform common server hardware maintenance tasks.
Knowledge and experience of end-host networking and Layer 2 networking is required. DHCP and DNS administration are a plus. Familiarity with OpenStack and/or Kubernetes is a plus. Familiarity with advanced network programmability (e.g. SDN) is a plus.
Good communications skills, ability to work independently and in a team with diverse skills and expertise.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Prefer a degree in Computer Science or related and 1-2 years of relevant experience.
