CONTEXT OF THE JOB:
The Keeler (https://keelerlab.bio.udel.edu/ ) and Lim Labs (https://limlab.bio.udel.edu/ ) in the Department of Biological Sciences (https://www.bio.udel.edu/ ) at the University of Delaware are seeking a limited term researcher. We are building a collaborative project investigating the neural underpinning of the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis. Using cutting-edge imaging techniques, we will characterize the neurons innervating the knee and temporomandibular joints. We are seeking a motivated researcher to work closely with Drs. Keeler and Lim to build this project. Under the supervision of Drs. Keeler and Lim, the limited term researcher will conduct experiments to support this collaborative project, help develop the experimental workflow, maintain a detailed laboratory notebook describing experimental methods and results, participate in research discussions, and interpret research results. This position offers the opportunity for motivated candidates to gain technical and leadership skills in two growing labs at UD.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan, organize, and conduct research using mouse models.
- Operate basic laboratory equipment (centrifuges, pH meters, analytical balances, and gel documentation systems).
- Exhibit proficiency with immunostaining and fluorescence microscopy.
- Comfort with R and Python to analyze large datasets is preferred but not necessary.
- Willingness to learn new techniques, take initiative and pivot when research priorities change.
- Provide technical assistance to others in the lab as needed.
- Maintain laboratory stocks, antibody records and reagents.
- Maintain a colony of genetically modified mice including mouse genealogy and breeding strategies, and a bank of mouse tissue and tissue sections.
- Maintain an inventory of lab supplies and equipment, reorder lab supplies, and track new orders of equipment and supplies.
- Comply with Department of Environmental Health and Safety, OSHA, and biohazard safety standards and promote workplace safety.
- Participate in laboratory meetings and present scientific projects at departmental meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS
We encourage applications from enthusiastic researchers with diverse backgrounds who have a strong interest basic biomedical research and demonstrated organizational abilities.
- MS or PhD in Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Neurobiology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Sciences, Bioengineering or a related field with at least 1 year of bench experience.
- Experience in mouse husbandry, tissue dissection, epifluorescence and/or confocal microscopy, and especially immunostaining are encouraged to apply.
- Knowledge of standard molecular and cell biology principles and research methods, as well as knowledge of basic laboratory equipment operation.
- Excellent organization skills; excellent written and oral communication skills; knowledge and skill working with Microsoft software (Excel, word, powerpoint); demonstrate the ability to work independently and contribute to a team environment; help to create and maintain a positive and supportive laboratory environment; be enthusiastic about learning new techniques.
