Context of the Job:

The Jaramillo-Lambert Lab (https://www.bio.udel.edu/people/anjl ) in the Department of Biological Sciences (https://www.bio.udel.edu ) at the University of Delaware is seeking a Limited Term Researcher. The Jaramillo-Lambert Lab studies the fundamentals of reproduction including meiosis & gametogenesis, fertilization, and egg activation. Under the supervision of Dr. Jaramillo-Lambert the Limited Term Researcher will carry out a wide range of experiments involving molecular, genetic, and biochemical approaches. The Limited Term Researcher will also assist with lab management duties such as ordering, inventory and ensuring compliance with university policies. This position offers the opportunity for motivated candidates to gain technical skills in a growing lab at UD.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Plans, organizes, and conducts research using C. elegans that require an understanding of genetics
  • Analyzes and interprets the results of experiments
  • Operates basic laboratory equipment (dissecting microscopes, fluorescent microscopes, centrifuges, pH meters, analytical balances, and gel electrophoresis systems)
  • Maintains C. elegans strains
  • Performs microinjections for CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing
  • Performs live and fixed sample confocal imaging for analyzing protein localization
  • Performs biochemical techniques including western blotting, co-immunoprecipitation, protein expression, and protein purification
  • Maintains an inventory of lab supplies and equipment, reorders lab supplies, and tracks new orders of equipment and supplies
  • Maintains laboratory databases
  • Coordinates and supervises undergraduate work study students responsible for media preparation, plate pouring, and common solutions
  • Complies with Department of Environmental Health and Safety, OSHA, and biohazard safety standards and promotes workplace safety
  • Participates in laboratory meetings and presents scientific projects at departmental and regional meetings

Qualifications:

A strong interest in basic biological research and demonstrated organizational abilities is necessary. The preferred candidate will have a MS or Ph.D in Biology (or related field). The candidate is expected to have knowledge of standard genetics and cell biology principles. Previous laboratory research experience and previous experience working with C. elegans is preferred.

In addition, the preferred candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, as well as knowledge and skill working with Microsoft suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). The preferred candidate will have a good work ethic, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The candidate must be able to interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds and contribute to an inclusive, positive, and supportive work environment, and be enthusiastic about learning new techniques.

Environmental/Occupational Exposures:

  • Work environment may include working in a cold room for short periods of time.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.

Special Requirements:

  • With or without assistance, must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Requires dexterity in handling delicate and hazardous materials and the ability to accurately discern colors and measure laboratory materials.
  • Must be able to work various and sometimes long hours due to the timing on experiments, including possibly weekends and evenings.
