Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the School of Nursing is to enhance and improve the health and well-being of the people of North Carolina and the nation, and, as relevant and appropriate, the people of other nations, through its programs of education, research, and scholarship, and through clinical practice and community service. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing has been the leader in nursing education in North Carolina throughout its history. Established in 1950, it was the first school of nursing in North Carolina to offer a four-year baccalaureate nursing degree program followed by the first master’s degree program, the first continuing education program for nurses, first doctoral program, and first accelerated BSN option to students with college degrees. Position Summary
The Chronic Disease Prevention Program (CDPP) is an 8 module educational online course that aims to help unemployed individuals utilizing employment services at Orange County DSS to enter the workforce in a healthy manner. The program instructs participants on such topics as weight maintenance, diet, exercise, stress management, and problem solving. The program involves 4 coach visits during the first 10 weeks while the participant is completing the course, and then 5 phone check-ins over the next 30 weeks after the course has been completed.
The LifeStyle Coach will guide participants through the CDPP while counseling individuals on such topics as exercise, nutrition, stress management, problem solving. The LifeStyle coach will primarily be responsible for scheduling and attending coach sessions, monitoring participants progress, and actively fielding questions or concerns from assigned participants.
The ideal candidate will display a robust knowledge of diet/nutrition, exercise, stress management, and problem solving. A transformational leadership style will be crucial to success in this role. Positivity, encouragement, and motivation will be needed when advising participants. Candidates will need strong communication skills in order to coherently articulate instructions to participants. In addition, the ability to actively adjust coaching techniques based on participants individual needs is vital.
This individual will be in constant contact with the study manager and principal investigator. Organization skills are essential to maintain calendar of appointments and detailed profiles of assigned participants. The candidate must have the ability to follow information to plan, organize, and conduct sessions.
During COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, the LifeStyle coach will conduct sessions via Zoom or phone. The coach must be able to efficiently instruct the participant on subject matter
while using virtual conference software.
In addition, this individual will complete study orientation and training to carry out all study roles, adhere to all COVID-19 safety protocols and procedures, complete regulatory requirements (IRB, etc.), and attend regular research team meetings to give status updates or raise any concerns. This position has the potential to move to full time permanent with benefits in future years.
Job duties:
1. Conduct Zoom and telephone sessions
2. Schedule and manage appointment calendar
3. Monitor participants progress
4. Address any questions or concerns from the participants
5. Prepare for sessions prior to visit by reviewing participant’s profile
6. Document session completion details
7. Stay educated and up-to-date on subject matter
8. Report to and give updates to the NC Works4Health Research Team
9. Preserve coach/participant relationship through mutual respect and sensitivity.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Registered Nurse or extensive experience with Life Coach certification and behavioral modification required
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience providing education through Public Healthcare Programs preferred.
