Situated in Stanford's highly dynamic research environment, the Moding Laboratory (modinglab.stanford.edu), led by Everett Moding, MD, PhD is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 2 to perform more complex functions and activities involved in defined research projects and independently conduct a portion of experiments. The Moding Laboratory performs translational cancer research by analyzing human tissue and blood samples with next-generation sequencing. Using a combination of state-of-the-art computational and experimental techniques, we aim to identify critical mediators of treatment resistance that can be validated in preclinical models and targeted to enhance the efficacy of cancer therapy. The Moding laboratory is administratively situated within the Stanford University School of Medicine’s Department of Radiation Oncology. As an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center the Stanford Cancer Institute is a dynamic and stimulating place to work as it maintains the highest level of scientific rigor, institutional support and coordination for the complete range of cancer-related research, including basic, translational, clinical and population-based science.


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences.
  • Background in molecular cancer biology and/or cancer genomics.
  • Expertise with molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, qPCR, CRISPR/Cas9, and/or cloning.
  • Knowledge of library preparation for next-generation sequencing.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Organized and capable of maintaining detailed experimental records.
  • Able to oversee lab maintenance and ordering of supplies.
  • Experience drafting and maintaining IRB, IACUC, and/or laboratory safety protocols.
  • Proficiency culturing human and/or mouse cell lines.
  • Experience and/or a desire to learn about handling and conducting research with mice would be helpful but is not required.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):  

Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and two years of relevant work experience; or Master’s degree in a related scientific field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles. 
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential. 
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds. 
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts. 
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls. 
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

•    May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens.

The expected pay range for this position is $70,000 to $88,000 per annum. 
Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
