The selection process outlined below will take place on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Candidates selected to proceed will complete all of the following:

  • Multi-Component Assessment.
  • Interview Panel.
  • Division Chief Interview.
  • Deputy Superintendent Interview.

Candidates who are selected to advance in the process will receive information for an assessment center overview on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at 5:00 PM (via Zoom).

IU POLICE DEPARTMENT (UA-PD-IUEAA)

Indiana University Public Safety pursues IU's commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university's mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department University Environmental Health and Safety , and Emergency Management and Continuity  with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.

  • Acts as shift commander and supervises sergeants, officers and other civilian personnel; makes work assignments and schedules; provides on-the-job training and assistance to officers; manages, trains, instructs, and evaluates work performance of subordinate personnel for completeness, accuracy and compliance within established university and departmental standards.
  • Responds to officers' calls for assistance and assume scene command of critical incidents; controls and assesses situations, identifies appropriate actions to preserve crime scenes, compiles critical information and coordinates activities with other jurisdictions.
  • Acts as departmental resource for law enforcement operations and university policies/procedures to internal and external constituents; communicates policy and procedural changes, implications of new or amended laws, and new techniques of law enforcement work to operations personnel.
  • Compiles and assimilates data, make recommendations to senior department administration, prepare statistical reports and analysis relative to the department's goals and objectives; ensures compliance with federal, state, local, institution and department policies.
  • Assesses, plans, and evaluates area operational plans and deployments; institutes and maintains standard operating procedures.
  • Completes project assignments from senior leaders concerning policy construction, security needs/issues; serves on various university and local/state law enforcement committees.
  • As needed, performs duties of patrol officer (takes calls for service, patrols to deter and detect crime, cites and/or arrests law violators, prepares and/or serves civil processes, secures and/or protects prisoners, provides protection services, etc.).
  • May be assigned specific detail (such as education, compliance, etc.).

EDUCATION/ WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in criminal justice or related field) and 5 years of law enforcement experience that includes 1 year of experience in a leadership role or demonstrating leadership (such as FTO, Training Instructor, acting in leadership capacity on behalf of supervisor/manager, etc.) OR
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED) and at least 8 years of law enforcement experience that includes1 year of experience in a leadership role or demonstrating leadership (such as FTO, Training Instructor, acting in leadership capacity on behalf of supervisor/manager, etc.)

Preferred

  • University law enforcement experience

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Possesses a valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University Upon Date of Hire
  • ILEA (Indiana Law Enforcement Academy) certified Upon Date of Hire
  • Current and continued certification in university required courses such as CPR, AED, Blood Borne Pathogens, IDACS, etc. Upon Date of Hire
  • Complete and maintain all required annual law enforcement training and certifications as prescribed by IUPD, Indiana State Law, and the Indiana Law enforcement Training Board (ILETB) Upon Date of Hire
  • Current firearms qualification Upon Date of Hire

Preferred

  • ILETB Certified Instructor Training Upon Date of Hire

The role frequently requires the ability to remain in a stationary position and communicate effectively. The role requires the ability to lift and/or move more than 165 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and detect how far away an object is. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
