About the Department

UC’s Office of Innovation is a resource for research and innovation partnership across UC, including the institution’s Technology Transfer function.  The Technology Transfer team works to help UC’s innovators create impact from their research and support them through various intellectual property and commercialization issues.


Job Overview

This position will join the Technology Transfer team as Licensing Associate 1 or 2, depending on the applicant’s education and experience.  The selected applicant will be primarily responsible for working with the Senior Licensing Associate(s) to support the commercialization of technologies developed at the university.  Those responsibilities will include interacting with university faculty and inventors, learning about and understanding their inventions, making patentability decisions, developing an intellectual property strategy for those inventions, managing a portfolio of assigned patent families, working with internal and outside counsel on patent prosecution issues and any other assigned tasks.  In addition, the selected applicant will be responsible for marketing the technologies in their portfolio, drafting and negotiating commercial agreements for those technologies and managing the resulting relationships.  

 

Additional responsibilities of the job may include: Controlling and managing legal costs; Making presentations to faculty or other groups about intellectual property or other subjects relating to technology commercialization; Working with the Venture Lab to assist inventors in developing their start-ups and commercializing their technology; Maintaining accurate records of all activities and patent applications; Managing our relationships with outside counsel; Maintaining faculty relationships and an outstanding level of customer service; and, Providing requested support to other members of the technology transfer staff.


Essential Functions
  • Monitor, review and track data use agreements, material transfer agreements and confidentiality agreements, including maintaining any related databases.
  • Perform market research on new technologies/inventions.
  • Develop marketing materials for new technologies/inventions.
  • Assist with identifying and recommending the best licensing candidates.
  • Assist with reviewing and negotiating option and license agreements for technologies.
  • Assist in educating UC faculty, students and staff on Intellectual Property and UC’s related policies.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships between UC and industry as well as other academic institutions.

Required Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Engineering or related field.
  • Five (5) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Experience

One (1) year of experience in academic technology transfer; scientific or research/development; contract compliance; licensing in an intellectual property setting, or related field.
