Required Education and Experience:

  • Successful completion of an accredited vocational or practical nursing program

  • 1 year of related experience

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Licensed as a Vocational or Practical Nurse in the State of Texas. Ability to obtain basic life certification within 3 months of employment. Licensure/certification must be maintained for continued employment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Successful completion of an accredited vocational nursing education program

  • One year of experience in an outpatient, hospital, or college health setting

  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities

Responsibilities: 

  • Patient Care - Provides direct patient care, patient evaluations, and treatment in accordance with professional nursing standards. Administers injections and dispenses medications. Advises patients on care of incisions and other simple health care problems. Assists procedures during procedures and exams. Documents patient health information/care activities in the electronic medical records system. Identifies needs of patient education and distributes patient education materials.

  • Medical Office - Greets and assists patients. Answers the telephone and transfers to appropriate unit/individual as needed. Assists in scheduling appointments and monitoring inventory. Cleans and disinfects patient exam areas and equipment in accordance with infection control procedures. Participates in continuing education as required by the department and the Texas Board of Nursing to maintain licensure and knowledge of current nursing practices and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned. Serves on committees as assigned.
