Position Summary
The North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute at UNC-CH is one of the medical research institutions working together as a national consortium to improve the way biomedical research is conducted across the country. The consortium, funded through the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA), shares a common vision to reduce the time it takes for laboratory discoveries to become treatments for patients, and to engage communities in clinical research efforts. The Center for Clinical and Translational Research (CTRC) is a program of the TraCS Institute within the home of the UNC School of Medicine. The CTRC provides outpatient clinical services to support a wide variety of research studies involving human subjects with an array of investigators representing the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health, Nursing, and others. 
The primary purpose of this Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) position is to provide nursing services with a focus on the care of participants who volunteer for clinical research studies conducted primarily in an ambulatory setting. The LPN, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), will provide specialized, nursing care to research subjects for healthy volunteers and to those with unusual and distinctive medical problems according to federal regulations, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and local and institutional polices. The LPN will provide management of clinical and research support activities to assure patient safety, address clinical needs and assure protocol integrity and accurate data collection. The LPN will ensure the integrity of research data while maintaining care that is safe, efficient, timely, effective, equitable, compassionate, and patient-centered. 
Job duties include but are not limited to, providing direct, individualized care to adult (60%) and pediatric (40%) research patients, phlebotomy and IV insertion, administration of FDA approved medications, monitoring and observation post dosing of investigational products, performing ECG’s, collecting and processing biological specimens, other data collection, providing direction and health teaching where applicable in relation to study protocol activities, reporting and recording care rendered, reporting the patient’s response to that care, and contributing to the CTRC’s continuous quality improvement programs including training of non-licensed research personnel. 
The LPN will also perform front desk and administrative activities which include patient check-in/out and creation of outpatient visits in Epic as well as daily tasks related to stocking of supplies, quality assurance and other office duties based upon unit needs. The LPN will act as a vital team member and conduct themselves in a professional manor and within their scope of practice as outlined by the NC Board of Nursing.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Licensed to practice as a Practical Nurse in the State of North Carolina.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Knowledge of licensed practical nursing care practices and principles.
* Ability to work with a variety of people in a professional, effective, diplomatic manner and maintain effective communications with patients, health care personnel, staff, and others. 
* Ability to work independently, as well as function as part of a team. 
* Significant attention to detail and the ability to successfully balance multiple competing priorities. 
* Must be flexible, collaborative, and have a willingness to assist others whenever needed. 
* Must be able to maintain a positive, results oriented work environment, contributing positively to teamwork and morale. 
* Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Minimum of one (1) year of direct clinical LPN experience. 
* Minimum of 6 months experience working as a pediatric LPN
* Possess a variety of healthcare experience with an emphasis on medical-surgical nursing. 
* Experience with Epic (electronic medical record). 
* Strong computer skills and working knowledge of Word, Excel, and Outlook. 
* Proficient in intravenous access and/or phlebotomy.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
* Visual attention and mental concentration is required at all times in this capacity due to the clinical nature of the work. 
* Ability to remain in front of a computer for extended periods of time and the ability to move 30 lbs.
* Ability to travel distances within the hospital, on campus and to offsite locations for research on location functions.
