The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing is seeking a 50-100% Licensed Practical Nurse to work in the Ault Psychiatric Inpatient Unit (7RC).

Adult Psychiatric Inpatient Unit (7RC):

The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics opened a new psychiatric unit in 2021. This state-of-the-art unit design features private rooms, natural light-filled spaces, open nurses' station, and exercise rooms. Innovative technology has been integrated into this space to promote a safe environment for staff members and patients.

7RCP is separated into a 12-bed mood disorder unit and a 13-bed general adult psychiatry unit. We utilize an evidence-based, patient-centered, interdisciplinary approach, with contributions from physicians, psychologists, advanced practice providers, master-level therapists, nurses, social workers, dieticians, occupational and recreational therapists, all striving to work collaboratively with patients and families to provide the best possible care. 7RCP features a new and collaborative position, Behavioral Health Consultant, with a goal to elevate the patient and team outcomes. Evidence-based therapeutic modalities utilized on the unit include dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, and trauma-informed care.

Summary:

  • Functions within the scope of the practical nursing license to provide care to patients following the plan of care established by the registered nurse. Performs technical assessments, administers immunizations, assists with minor surgeries, administers medications and treatments, fits orthopedic devices, and may manage clinic programs.

Position responsibilities, but not limited to:

  • Under direct supervision of physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or registered nurse
  • Performs technical, patient care and related clerical functions in an ambulatory setting
  • Duties may involve the use of electronic word/data processing equipment and/or conventional office equipment
  • Provides patient education regarding diagnosis, medication and treatment under direct or indirect supervision of the physician, or as directed by clinic protocols
  • Applies dressings, assesses and documents wound condition, removes sutures, assures proper fit of orthopedic equipment, and provides treatments according to standardized protocols. Responsible for instructing patients on the specific procedures for follow-up care
  • Initiates basic cardiac life support and assists in emergency situations as needed
  • Assures timely reporting of lab work to physician staff and appropriate transfer of medical records as directed by physician or as requested by patients
  • Maintains appropriate inventory of medical equipment and patient education materials in patient examination areas
  • Performs physical assessment, which may include vital signs, weight, height, and current history and makes observations relevant to patient conditions. Documents and/or reviews all pertinent data, including allergies, current medications, and health history

Percent of Time: 50%-100% - 20-40 hours per week
Schedule: Shift preference negotiable, but every third weekend and rotating holidays are required

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • Licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with the Iowa Board of Nursing, or eligible for temporary work permit. Responsible to take the required continuing education hours to maintain a valid LPN certification.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification

Special Qualifications:

  • Medical Terminology
  • Public Contact/Customer Service

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expanded IV Therapy
