The licensed mental health co-responder, under general supervision, is responsible for providing multi-culturally competent mental health crisis intervention and outreach to individuals, couples, and groups on campus through an ongoing partnership between Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) and University Police Department (UPD)Duties include a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive approach to crisis intervention, triage services, risk assessments for harm to self or others, referrals to mental health treatment programs, follow-up, and case management. Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.

Schedule Details: This field-based position will work under CAPS purview while functioning remotely out of the UPD campus station. Work hours will be a standard day shift, 8 am to 5 pm, as well as on-call outside of those hours. Shifts may naturally overlap with other shifts due to unfolding events in the moment.

Position Details: This position is on-call for ride-along UPD campus calls pertaining to high distress students, provides consultation for crisis intervention, on-the-scene stabilization, and hospitalization requirements alongside officers. This position is responsible for assisting law enforcement officers in the field with service calls involving individuals who exhibit symptoms of a mental, behavioral, or emotional event.

Job Description Summary

Training and consultation will be a significant component of this role. This position provides mental-health training and consultation for police officers and staff on mental health topics such as trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, etc. Community outreach will include active participation and expertise in select committees such as the Critical Incident Response Team, TellSomebody reporting, and Special Situations Team. The provider will work closely to coordinate case management with Student Assistance Services, police, and the counseling department. 

This position is a new initiative, and the qualified candidate will assist in the development of this position.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance, Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, other specialty related to job function

  • Five years post-licensure clinical mental health experience in college counseling center or other relevant setting or National Certified Counselor (NCC) designation with three years of full-time post licensure experience in college counseling center or relevant setting

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

  • Must maintain licensure for continued employment

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse population applying a trauma-informed, multi-cultural perspective

  • Skilled in handling high distress and emergency mental health situations

  • Knowledgeable regarding Texas hospitalization procedures and statutes

  • Ability to effectively provide educational programs to large audiences

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Other Requirements or Factors:

  • This position will require additional fingerprinting and background checks beyond typical licensing fingerprinting

  • This position will wear a bullet proof vest and other safety requirements per UPD protocols

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Continuing education in law enforcement, trauma, and/or crisis management

  • Ten years of crisis management with law enforcement

  • Experience developing and teaching educational programming and workshops for crisis intervention training, mental health, and trauma-informed care

  • Experience in a college campus setting

  • Experience working closely with law enforcement

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • TCOLE certified peace officer

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in PointNClick or other electronic medical records software.

Responsibilities:

  • Crisis Response - Co-Respond with law enforcement to campus dispatch calls regarding consumers who exhibit symptoms of a mental, behavioral, or emotional event. Assess and address immediate risk concerns of harm to self and/or others. Collect collateral information as appropriate to facilitate optimal outcome for consumers. Attend roll calls as scheduled as well as briefings and other functions as needed. Provide clinical guidance and consultation to law enforcement officers for interacting with mental health consumers, determining appropriate disposition, and locating available resources. Provision of direct clinical care in the field during crisis stabilization meetings, treatment planning, referral meetings, and case management activities. Collaborate effectively and efficiently with other campus and community agencies.

  • Mental Health Case Management - Collaborate with UPD, CAPS and Student Assistance Services to refer and follow-up on complex mental health cases. Communicate with program administrator(s) on the outcomes of police calls and consumer referrals. Work closely with CAPS Case Referral. Manager on tracking/follow-up.

  • Educational Programming and Training - Train officers and UPD staff on evidence-based crisis intervention services, working with mental health consumers, de-escalation techniques, and other programming as identified. Conduct advocacy and education with campus stakeholders, campus and community partners, and treatment providers.

  • Administrative - Assist with policy and protocol development. Collect and report data as directed. Meet ethical obligations for timely documentation of counseling services per State of Texas licensure requirements and UHS/CAPS and UPD policies. Participate and/or lead pertinent committees/trainings. Perform other duties as assigned.
