As a member of the Technical Services department, which includes the Acquisitions and Metadata Services teams, this individual is responsible for maintaining databases and updating records identified through system-generated reports and other quality control mechanisms. They perform complex copy cataloging for materials in all formats and languages, provide original cataloging for materials, and contribute to authority control under librarian supervision. The person collaborates with different Technical Services teams to coordinate database maintenance projects, batch processing, holdings maintenance, and export of MARC or other metadata records to other systems or utilities. They also perform selected physical processing tasks, create and maintain local documentation related to cataloging and database maintenance, and perform other duties as assigned by their library manager. The position involves supervising student assistants and assisting in training other staff in the department. The individual acts as a troubleshooter to identify and resolve complicated authority control and database maintenance issues, as well as complex copy cataloging problems.

 This regular, full-time position works normal business hours.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Database Maintenance and Statistics (40%)

• Corrects and/or updates bibliographic, holdings, and item records identified through system-generated reports, monitoring programs, library staff and user requests, and other quality control mechanisms

• Provide assistance with any collection analysis projects done in the Technical Services department

• Query data and gather statistics for analysis, reporting, surveys, and evidence-based decision-making.

• Withdraws materials; Coordinates withdrawn items disposal

• Participates in any other assigned database maintenance and quality control activities as needed

• Monitors and maintains efficient workflows of database maintenance activities

• Assists in training staff in local cataloging practice, database maintenance, application of Library of Congress subject headings and classification, as well as use of Library of Congress authority files

• Cataloging (40%)

• Works with librarians and staff in the complex copy cataloging of target-collections (e.g. gift collections, architecture resources, etc.)

• Adds classification numbers, names, and subject headings to member copy as needed

• Prepares original cataloging for titles with and without prior editions/formats for review by a departmental librarian

• Assists in special projects to support departmental goals and Library-wide initiatives

• Other activities (20%)

• Works with others to hire, train, and evaluate student assistants and coordinate student assistant workflow

• Assists in the physical processing of library materials, as needed

• Creates local cataloging and physical processing documentation for student and staff use

• Other duties as assigned

• Maintains helpful and supportive customer service behavior with all library customers, both internal and external.

• Establishes effective and supportive interdepartmental relationships and participates in cross-training opportunities to increase library and unit effectiveness and to disseminate information effectively.

• Communicates frequently and effectively with all University staff, faculty, and administrators in a timely manner regarding procedures, policies, and other necessary information.

• When possible, participates in committees and teams within and outside the Libraries to provide services to the Libraries, University, and the Community.

This position reports to the Library Manager in Technical Services.

This individual supervises student assistants, as appropriate.

• LEVEL OF CONTACTS

The individual works with all levels of library faculty and staff, student employees and, on occasion, with the library patrons. In all contacts, the incumbent is expected to be professional and courteous.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree.

• Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.

• Basic data entry and/or word processing skills

• Analytic and critical thinking skills

• Aptitude for accuracy and detail

• Ability to work cooperatively and productively with others

• Ability to work independently in a team environment

• Good oral and written English language communication skills

• Excellent organizational skills

• Excellent knowledge of basic standards for bibliographic description

• Good knowledge of cataloging and metadata standards, such as RDA, MARC, and Library of Congress

classification and subject headings

• Knowledge of authority control practices

• Prior experience in copy cataloging preferred

• Working knowledge of one (1) foreign language preferred

ON-THE-JOB-TECHNICAL SKILLS

Position will develop proficiency in the following:

• Thorough knowledge of OCLC software and OCLC bibliographic formats and standards

• Thorough knowledge of Ex Libris Alma

• Through knowledge in handling authority control procedures involved in the use and maintenance of the library's database

• Thorough knowledge of Library of Congress classification and subject headings, RDA, and USMARC

• Thorough knowledge of local cataloging standards and practices

• Thorough knowledge of departmental policies and procedures

• Good knowledge of MS Word and other MS Office products, as necessary

• Proficiency in using e-mail
