Department Information

Stanford University School of Medicine's Lane Medical Library accelerates scientific discovery, clinical care, medical education and humanities through teaching, collaboration, and delivery of biomedical and historical resources. The library is a state-of-the-art medical library within the Medical Student Education group which supports Stanford Medical Center's research, education, and patient care objectives. Lane Library supports its mission to accelerate scientific discovery in part by curating a collection of print and digital knowledge resources relevant to the in-depth research, graduate-level education, and clinical patient care performed by the Stanford Medicine community and its affiliated hospitals and clinics. We are proud of our rich history dating back to 1882.

Job Purpose

Lane Medical Library, Stanford School of Medicine, is seeking a Library Specialist 3 to perform complex duties as a member of the Access Services Team. Lane Library supports the clinical and academic needs of clinicians, faculty, students, and staff within the Stanford Medicine enterprise, which is composed of the School of Medicine, Stanford Health Care Hospital, and Stanford Children's Health Hospital.

Reporting to the Circulation Team Lead, the Library Specialist provides circulation, information, and interlibrary loan assistance to its users. The Library Specialist devotes the majority of time to staffing the Information Desk and serving library patrons. Additionally, the Library Specialist is responsible for the online registration process for library classes and events as well as maintaining and reporting on statistics and assessments generated from our various public services activities.

We are seeking someone with excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills who can effectively assist library patrons with kindness, fairness, and friendliness.

This position will be based on-site at the main Stanford campus. The nature of the responsibilities will require the following work schedule:

  • Monday - Thursday: 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

  • Friday: Noon - 8:30 p.m. - Closing the library on Friday evenings.

Core Duties

  • Provide professional and courteous assistance to users through the library's customer relations management system (LibAnswers), phone, and live chat service, and in-person interactions.

  • Assist and instruct users in using the library's website and online resources such as ebooks, ejournals, PubMed, resource guides, and databases.

  • Explain library policies and procedures to users.

  • Staff the Information Desk and perform user services relating to the circulation of materials using the online library system, FOLIO.

  • Maintain statistical data of key departmental metrics including patron information interactions, surveys of library spaces used by users, and entry door counts of library users.

  • Develop tools for bi-annual door surveys and compile final survey results.

  • Produce graphical and summary reports for use by departments inside and outside the university.

  • Oversee and maintain the online registration process for library classes and events. Includes CME documentation, accessibility arrangements, and communication with participants.

  • Maintain the library's posted hours on the website and communicate library hours to the Stanford University Libraries system.

  • At times, may be solely responsible for library operations and applying judgment to situations around users and facilities.

  • May be required to work occasional evening, weekend or holiday shifts.

  • May be required to work at library events.

  • Other duties may be assigned


Education & Experience (Required)

Two-year college degree plus three or more years of experience in an academic library, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Required)

  • Knowledge of complex, information systems.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Demonstrated experience using judgment and initiative to analyze and recommend new procedures.

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision and self-manage tasks and projects for timely completion.

  • Demonstrated skill with Microsoft Office word processing and spreadsheet tools, Smartsheets, and Google Drive.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Knowledge of and experience with integrated library systems.

Physical Requirements

  • Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.

  • Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand.

  • Rarely use a telephone, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), operate hand controls.

  • Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 70 pounds.

Working Conditions

  • May work in confined spaces and at heights 4-10 feet; be exposed to dust and mold; work extended hours, evenings and weekends.

The expected pay range for this position is $28.37 to $34.10 per hour.
