Library Specialist, Media Services
Research & Educational Support - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (21005271)
This position supports students, faculty, and staff from a variety of academic units and departments in a public service setting; provides instruction and training on the Media Collection; manages inventory and performs basic repairs; and is responsible for the usability and maintenance of Stark Media Course Reserves.
Working with the manager of the Media Production Equipment & Services (MPES) unit, this position manages the Library's Media Collection in alignment with the needs of University programs and curricula. This position collaborates with ULS colleagues and library users on the identification and acquisition of film collections in multiple formats in order to develop and maintain a collection that supports the research, teaching, and learning needs of the University. In addition, this position is responsible for designing and delivering step-by-step workshops, providing clear descriptions of best practices and policies for collection use by students, staff, faculty, and university partners, and developing tutorials for use both in-person and online by utilizing a variety of media, technology, digital tools, formats and platforms. This unit also supports the One Button Studio, the Whisper Room, and Media Production Equipment & Services, providing hands-on technological and customer service assistance in these areas.
This position also indirectly supervises student employee in conjunction with the MPES position, and is expected to work with the unit head to hire, train, and supervise 15-20 student employees. Other regular duties include as-needed shifts at the Donald S. Wood Service Desk, supporting Hillman Library public services by offering high-quality basic reference and customer service to library users in-person, over the phone, and via chat.

In general, hours of work are Tues. – Fri. 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Sat. 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; On occasion, evening and holidays may be required.
Four years of college or four years relevant experience plus high school diploma/GED. Must have a strong academic background or relevant experience in order to answer basic reference questions and to have an understanding of the academic research process.
Previous experience with film and media and multi-media equipment is required. A high degree of familiarity with common computer hardware and software and customer service experience is required. Teaching/training experience is strongly preferred. Previous supervisory experience or work in a library setting is desirable, but not required. Must be able to adapt to changing platforms to present information to library users for in-person and virtual presentations.
