The Library Specialist I, is responsible for performing accessioning and verifying of library material entering the Joint Library Facility (JLF); also performs shelving and pulling of materials, document delivery services and other support activities for JLF. Required Education and Experience:

  • High School graduation or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of library experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. 
  • Ability to move moderate boxes, books, and a heavy book truck or similar items.
  • Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores. 
  • Knowledge of email, word processing, spreadsheets and internet search engines.  
  • Good interpersonal skills with reliable attendance and excellent communication and customer service skills.

Other Factors:

  • Ability to work in narrow aisles which may include bending, reaching, stretching, stooping, and lifting/moving activities as well as standing for an extended period of time. 
  • This position is located at the RELLIS site in Bryan, TX.; Must be able to work Monday – Friday 8 am – 4:30 pm with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break. 
  • Ability to stand and work on book picker that moves/lifts up to high heights. 
  • Safely lifts or moves heavy boxes up to chest height and pushes or moves heavy carts.

Responsibilities:

  • Accessioning and Verifying Items Received - Uses the Joint Library Facility’s Archival Software (Caia Soft) to ensure the correct accession and verification of the items entering the storage facility.  Uses the standards of descriptive cataloging for monograph and serials to verify correct records.  Navigates JLF’s and their participating libraries’ Online Public Access Catalogs to verify holdings.
  • Shelving Items in Warehouse - Uses Caia software to accurately document the location of each tray in the warehouse.  Safely uses the various heavy machinery including a power lift, electric pallet jack, and order picker to place storage trays on shelves in the warehouse which may involve high heights.  Participates in all required OSHA and other safety training in order to use the heavy machinery.
  • Document Deliver Service - Performs general document delivery services. Retrieves material for shipment or performs electronic delivery to the customer’s desktop.   Shelves and re-shelves document delivery requested material.  Uses Illiad and Docline software to download, process, and deliver requested material.  Uses Article Exchange and BSCAN scanner and Proscan 3000 for electronic article delivery.  Prepares material to be shipped out to requesting libraries via Trans-Amigos and FedEx using FedEX Ship Manager hardware and software.  Uses knowledge of copyright law as it applies to resource sharing.
  • Support Activities - Monitors and secures the JLF’s receiving bay.   Constructs trays for shelving materials and boxes for shipping (Interlibrary Loan).  Creates duplicate barcodes and tray labels using the Zebra Design Pro Hardware and Software.  Operates and troubleshoots JLF’s label printers, including replacing spent label and ribbon rolls.  Helps to develop and promote diversity through appropriate programming for JLF and the RELLIS Campus.  Contributes to the overall activities for the operation of the facility.  Acts as a resource to student employees at JLF.  Understands the basic functions performed at the Joint Library Facility’s.  Uses positive interpersonal and collaboration skills and basic conflict resolution skills in resolving issues with other JLF employees. Performs other duties as assigned.
