The Library Specialist I, under supervision, will be responsible for shelving, straightening, shifting and shelf-reading of the Library’s collections that are held in the Look Reading Room. The selected candidate will also use automated reports to remove newly acquired monographs from the Look Reading Room to be transferred to the stacks. What You Need to Know

Rate: $11.21 an hour

Schedule: Must be able to work Monday – Friday 7:45 am – 4:45 pm with one hour lunch break.  Must be able to adjust schedule on an occasional basis to help cover during extended hours or in the event of an emergency. 

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • One year of related library experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. 

  • Ability to move moderate boxes, books, and a heavy book truck or similar items.

  • Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores. 

  • Knowledge of email, word processing, spreadsheets and internet search engines.  

  • Good interpersonal skills.  

  • Reliable attendance.  

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills. 

  • Ability to work in narrow aisles and involving bending, reaching, stretching, stooping, and lifting activities as well as standing for extended period of time.

  • Basic keyboarding skills.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Previous library, shelving or stacking experience.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Library of Congress and SuDocs Call numbers. 

  • Ability to learn basic library organization, terminology, and materials.

  • Ability to quickly and accurately put items in order alphabetically and numerically as required.  

  • General knowledge of library services and functions.

Responsibilities:

  • Collection Maintenance: Shelves, straightens, shifts and shelf-reads all newly acquired monographs, Bestsellers, Weinbaum, Current Periodicals, and Reference Collection that are held in the Look Reading Room.   Ensures that all materials are available in a timely manner.   Uses Voyagermis reports to remove newly acquired monographs from the Look Reading Room to be transferred to the stacks.   Interacts daily with a diverse population of library users. Provides general customer service support for library users. Responds to basic questions and instructs library customers on accessing library online catalogs, research guides, physical collections, and other electronic reference databases. Performs data entry and records updates in spreadsheets.

  • Shelving Unit Support: Picks up library material on the first and second floors of Evans and transports materials to the Intermediate Shelving in Evans.  Assists with shelving, straightening, and shelf-reading materials in the main library’s collection, especially during peak load periods.

  • Administrative Support: Opens the Annex 3rd floor daily. Assists in compiling unit statistics. May assist the Library Manager in day-to- day training and monitoring new student employees.  Reports any issues back to the Library Manager and performs other duties as assigned.
