Position Focus:

Under the general supervision of the Head of Access and Document Delivery Services, performs a wide range of Access & Delivery Services duties. Serves as a resource for established circulation procedures and policies for patrons and staff. Co-ordinates work with other Library Services Assistants to expedite and to maximize completion of work for circulation services.

Performs a variety of circulation procedures: charge, discharge, renew, recall library materials; create item records. Uses software to reserve rooms and equipment for patrons. Processes Eli Express in the afternoon. Packages and creates shipping labels for books sent to Yale patrons and other libraries to fill or return interlibrary loans. Explains use and performs routine troubleshooting and basic maintenance of photocopy machines, printers, and computers. Provides information on library accounts, services, resources, and procedures to patrons and staff, in person, by telephone and email. Demonstrates online public catalog features for patrons. Attaches call number labels to print monographs. Serves as backup for interlibrary loan lending and scan and deliver requests. May assist in compiling statistics on circulation activity and gate count. Performs other duties as assigned.


Essential Duties

1. Answers questions on use and restrictions of materials.  2. Composes correspondence answering reference questions. Performs a variety of public services and technical services functions. 3. Searches and verifies bibliographic data with incomplete information or source material in catalogs, reference sources, files and databases.  4. Corrects or recommends corrections in data files. 5. Instructs, provides work direction or revises the work of other staff. May assists in the coordination and distribution of work.  6. Determines and assigns library privileges to visitors. Completes and processes interlibrary loan requests. Monitors expenditures, reconciles statements and maintains records.  7. Arranges, describes and prepares finding aids for collection.  8. Mounts, labels, catalogs, slides and photographs. Assists in preparation of exhibits.  9. Oversees a library during evening and weekends.  10. Performs clerical functions incidental to library activities.


Required Education and Experience

Four years of related work experience, two of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school level education; or two years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to deal with people in a courteous, patient, and professional manner and work cooperatively as a team member.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

References must indicate excellent attendance and punctuality and attention to detail, diligent and focused performance, the ability to perform effectively in a high-volume environment with changing priorities and interruptions.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Establishes and maintains productive relationship with internal and external patrons to ensure quality customer service.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Proficiency in the use of word processing software. Proven experience searching bibliographic databases and online catalogs.
