Black Hills State University seeks a collaborative leader to guide and implement a vision and strategic direction for the library. The Director will revitalize library services, spearhead projects, and assess resources in the newly renovated and expanded E.Y. Berry Library-Learning Center. We are looking for a librarian who is proactive and innovative and who will be a strong advocate for the library as a partner in meeting the educational mission of the University. This position will build and maintain relationships with university administration, faculty, staff, and students, as well as other libraries and the Spearfish community. Our library culture promotes a positive work-life balance and opportunities for meaningful interactions with campus and community members. Spearfish is a welcoming community with ample cultural and outdoor opportunities in the scenic Black Hills. The Library Director is a 12-month position, reporting directly to the Provost.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Administration
  • Lead library strategic planning.
  • Oversee daily operations of the library.
  • Guide policy creation and ensure implementation.
  • Work with the campus community to identify needs related to library services and resources. 

Personnel and Communication
  • Supervise and mentor library staff, conduct performance appraisals, and make staffing decisions. 
  • Serve on committees, including the South Dakota Library Council (SLiC). 
  • Advocate for the library with various stakeholders. 

Budget and Finance
  • Manage the library operating budget and prepare cost/benefit analyses.
  • Prepare annual reports and compile statistical documentation. 
  • Cultivate donors and obtain grants to enhance project funding. 

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science. Added subject master’s or doctoral degree preferred.
  • At least five years’ experience working in an academic library. Management and/or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with project management.
