Library Assistant, University Libraries (2-year Position)

Job Description:

The Library Assistant helps provide access and circulation services in the J. Thomas McCarthy Library at the Doheny campus. The position supports circulation services, print and digital course reserves, and interlibrary loan, as well as access to library spaces, print materials, and equipment. Reporting to and under the general direction of the Circulation Coordinator at the Doheny campus. This position full-time, limited-term and is benefits eligible.
Work Location: Doheny Campus (Downtown Los Angeles).
Start Date: Immediately
End Date: February 15, 2026

Position Hourly Rate: $16.78 - $19.00
Hiring salary can be above the posted pay range if candidate's qualifications are determined to be above the minimum requirements of the position description.
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports circulation and access services for the J. Thomas McCarthy Library, including circulation desk operations, stacks maintenance, course reserves, and inter-library lending (LINK+, interlibrary loan, Rapid Ill, document delivery, etc.)
  • Works collaboratively with librarians, staff, and student workers on the management of physical spaces and collections
  • Collaborates with other Access Services staff to train and supervise student workers
  • Assists with the collection of statistics including circulation, gate and head counts, reserves, physical and electronic interlibrary loan usage, intercampus mail tracking, and study room usage
  • Performs opening and closing functions of the library at designated times
  • Assists the Access Services Coordinator in evaluating student workers
  • Trouble-shoots circulation issues, places items on hold, and answers questions from patrons
  • Requests event setups and room reservations for the Doheny campus in the campus events system (25Live)

  • Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with and supports librarians and staff at both campus libraries to ensure optimal service is given to all members of the MSMU community
  • Weekends and evenings may be required
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Access Services


  • Requirements:

    Knowledge:
    • Knowledge of library access services processes, including circulation services, interlibrary loan, collection management, and stacks maintenance.
    • Knowledge of integrated library systems and automated circulation systems.
    • Familiarity with the ALA Code of Ethics and copyright and open access best practices as they relate to academic libraries.
    • Demonstrated success with managing projects and/or personnel

    Abilities and Skills:
    • The position requires a strong customer service orientation, excellent organizational skills, and a passion for operational effectiveness.
    • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.
    • English comprehension and communication proficiency are required; Spanish or another second language is desired.
    • Demonstrated ability to be flexible, adapt, and learn new skills.
    • Ability to work well with diverse students and faculty and with non-traditional students.
    • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively
    • Excellent customer service skills
    • Strong communication, teamwork, and project management skills
    • Ability to work on weekends and evenings as needed
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity
    • Willingness to innovate in response to evolving requirements of the academic community

    Education:
    • Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science at an accredited college or university, or close to completion, required.

    Experience:
    • Minimum of one year of experience in access services at an academic library
    • Experience utilizing circulation modules of ILS
    • Experience with stacks maintenance in an academic library
    • Experience supervising staff or students preferred
