Position Summary

Columbia University seeks a Library Assistant IV to work at the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library. The Library Assistant IV has primary responsibility to perform and review stack maintenance routines including but not limited to: sorting, arranging, pick-ups, shelving, shelf-reading, straightening and shifting. Daily responsibilities include:


Responsibilities

  • Monitors and reports on stacks conditions to Head of Access and Collection Management on a daily basis.  Conducts various stack condition surveys as directed.
  • Processes electronic document delivery (Scan and Deliver) requests for eligible Columbia affiliates including checking citations, pulling books and journals from stacks, scanning materials, and consulting with bibliographic staff.
  • Process interlibrary loan lending (ILL) and RapidX requests including checking citations, pulling books from stacks, scanning materials, preparing books for physical loans, and consulting with bibliographic staff.
  • Responsible for operations at Avery Service/Reserve Desk at regularly assigned times.  Performs all duties of said Desk including but not limited to: circulation, reserves, in-house circulation of in-library use only materials from both on-site and ReCAP.
  • Handles patron policy, directional, and informational inquiries in-person, on the phone, and via email. Closes library on specified evenings, including sweeping for patrons, turning off all applicable lights and appliances, and locking secured areas.
  • Assigns, revises, and trains General Assistants in tasks listed above, with a specific focus on training new student workers in stacks maintenance at the start of each semester.
  • Performs complex missing book searches, processes lists such as lost/missing action lists, and processes withdrawals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Hours are:
Semester: Wednesday.-Friday: 1:00-9:00PM, Saturday: 9:30AM-5:30PM, Sunday: 11:30AM-7:30PM

Summer:  Tuesday-Thursday: 1:00-9:00PM, Friday: 9:00AM-5:00PM, Saturday: 10:00AM-6:00PM

Intersession:  Monday-Friday: 9:00AM-5:00PM

Schedule may be different during intersession and summer terms. Schedule subject to change based on staffing needs.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma and/or its equivalent required.
  • Experience using computers in a work environment and facility using Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to respond to customer-service via e-mail, telephone, and in-person in a fast-paced environment that deals with faculty, students, staff, administrators, and visiting library users.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Must be able to handle some repetitive physical tasks such as book shifting.
  • Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 40 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Working knowledge of a Western European language.
  • Library experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of an integrated library system, preferably Voyager.
  •
