Position Summary
The Library Assistant II (LAII)-Circulation supports the UIW Libraries by performing a range of duties related to the efficient operation of the School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) Library’s circulation and public service functions, to include opening/closing the library. Position also assists with student worker training and the implementation of innovative access services processes. The Library Assistant II-Circulation reports to the Director of Library Services.
Note that this position will work at the School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) Library is located at the UIW Brooks Campus at 7615 Kennedy Hill Drive, San Antonio, TX 78235.

Job Duty Name Customer Service/Circulation Desk
Description of Job Duties
  • Staffs the Circulation Desk, answers information and directional questions, and refers reference questions to the appropriate librarian.
  • Staffs UIW Libraries Chat service to answer information/directional questions.
  • Works closely with library staff to manage coverage for the library’s Circulation Desk when needed.

Description of Job Duties
  • Uses the staff-side of the Integrated Library System (ILS) to support physical item circulation and to manage patron item requests.
  • Assists Circulation Supervisor with staff-side ILS processing/reporting functions such as reserve item processing and bursar transfer reporting.

Description of Job Duties
  • Oversees work of student employees when on that duty.
  • Provides training to student employees under the direction of the Circulation Supervisor.
Job Duty Name Equipment and Technology
Description of Job Duties
  • Performs basic maintenance for public printers.
  • Assists patrons with basic computer software and printer issues.
  • Reports and troubleshoots gate counters.
  • Conducts SOM Library Monthly Inventory Check.
  • Assists the Circulation Supervisor working with SOM IT in maintenance of SOM circulating devices, and in inventory audit.
  • Reports all issues beyond general maintenance to the Circulation Supervisor.

  • Performs the management of shelf space for physical collections under the direction of the Circulation Supervisor.
  • Maintains open public spaces and group study spaces to ensure that the environment is clean and furnished appropriately, periodically checks technology in those spaces.

Qualifications


Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of online integrated services platforms used in libraries and the staff-side functions to support Circulation tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills and a strong commitment to customer service.
  • Excellent customer service in a public service/ customer service capacity.
  • Ability to effectively problem-solve routine circulation challenges.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.
Required Education
60 college hours.
Required Work Experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in libraries or related environment with direct responsibilities for customer service.
  • At least one (1) year of supervisory or leadership experience in a library or related environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • At least one (1) year of supervisory experience in a library or related environment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in Access Services or Circulation.
  • Experience with ALMA or another integrated library system.

Work Hours
Typical Work Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday as follows:  Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (10am-7pm) and Friday & Saturday (8am–5pm) 
OR 
Sunday through Thursday as follows:  Sunday (12 noon – 9pm), Monday – Thursday (10am – 7pm). 
Note that work schedule may change, depending on the needs of the school or library.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift at least 20 lbs. and push and pull book trucks weight at least 100 lbs.
  • Ability to reach overhead, bend, squat, and climb stairs to retrieve library materials.
  • Ability to regularly move about library and campus, as well as actively engage with patrons.
