POSITION OBJECTIVE

The School of Medicine is one of the top-25 medical schools in the country and both the #1 medical school and largest biomedical research institution in Ohio. Situated in the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine Dean's Office, the Liaison for Professional Identity Development will strengthen the School's commitment of promoting the highest ideals of professional identity and supporting a learning environment where people feel psychologically and physically safe, belong, and can thrive.  This role will be responsible for The Accountability Management System (AMS), which provides a private reporting portal for students, faculty, and staff to share about behavior that may be unprofessional, biased, or unfavorable.  AMS also provides a way to recognize and celebrate community members who are excelling in their contributions to a positive learning environment.  The Liaison will oversee all reports, ensure that each referral is triaged to an appropriate subgroup, case managed from start to finish, and ensure timely follow up throughout the process.  The position will work cooperatively with a myriad of other school and campus offices when the nature of a referral mandates it be moved to the partner office's jurisdiction. The role will be responsible for the development of programs and resources that proactively nurture an appropriate professional self-concept in the learning environment. This position will compile and share data both internally and externally regarding the learning environment and in compliance with accreditation needs.  The liaison will be expected to maintain discretion and privacy of those that refer and are referred. The position will report to the School of Medicine's Chief of Staff, work closely with the Senior Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Excellence. and will work with members of the School of Medicine's Dean Leadership team.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Review reports of issues, including interpersonal and inter-group dynamics, that impact a psychologically safe and healthy preclinical and clinical learning environment. Assess reported issues and ensure that each referral is triaged to an appropriate subgroup, case managed from start to finish, and ensure timely follow up throughout the process. Assemble appropriate review groups and ensure reports are moving along through necessary steps, redirecting as appropriate and stepping in to facilitate investigatory or review steps as needed. (20%)
  • Conduct appropriate outreach, referral, and community engagement to internal and external resources to educate potential users on the availability and use of the portal. Assess levels of use and devise and execute strategies to ensure maximum reach and education efforts. Collaborate with Equity Office and Title IX training as appropriate.  (10%)
  • Develop programs and resources that proactively nurture an appropriate professional self-concept in the learning environment. Manage and facilitate programs that train, raise awareness, and provide other services for the campus and clerkship sites regarding conflict management, community expectations, learning environment improvements, and harm repair. Oversee the celebration of exemplary examples of learning environment leaders, including the nominating/award processes and recognition events and initiatives. Maintain and develop inhouse and outside resources for professionalism trainings, coaching activities, feedback best practices, and other development opportunities for students, staff, and faculty. Work with campus partners to collaboratively assess needs, develop programming, and evaluate strategies to enhance the knowledge and skills of the community. (15%)
  • Participate in the long-term resolution of conflicts and o1her employee relations issues by partnering with management to identify and reduce or eliminate root causes. Partner with key colleagues related to professionalism and healthy learning environments; including the Office of Faculty Development, the Professional Conduct Committee, the various Medical Education Working Groups, Office of Graduate Education, Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Excellence, Compliance, Office of Equity, and General Counsel, etc. to triage issues and ensure the School of Medicine is in compliance and all parties involved are in alignment. Navigate situations and relationships with other school and campus offices when the nature of a referral mandates it be moved to the partner office's jurisdiction. Partner with system partners and connect staff, faculty and students with existing school-wide e curriculum and other resources. (10%)
  • Ensure proper case flow, timeline, and documentation of all cases in the Accountability Management System (Symplicity database). Maintain, catalogs, and analyzes all reported incidents, prepares reports, maintains dashboards, and engages in trend analysis work. Ensure the School of Medicine has consistency of behavior in our language, actions, and situation navigation.  (10%)
  • Interpret policies, advising on complex employee relation issues and policy interpretation requiring case by case analysis. Provide advice and consultation to employees and management regarding interpretation and application of a broad range of policies, procedures, practices, and laws. Serve as advocate for emotional and social wellbeing and being a role model of emotional intelligence. Communicate the rights of the individuals and help them acquire the full benefit of due process. Maintain an atmosphere of fairness and due process for all parties and to promote an environment conducive to learning, reasoned discourse, and mutually acceptable conflict resolution. (8%)
  • Analyze reports for trends, needs and opportunities for improvement. Collaborate with the School of Medicine's Leadership and offices to assess overall environment, identify recurring issues and themes and provide strategic recommendations for policy, procedure, and programmatic changes. Provide data for annual reports for the dean¿s leadership team, LCME for their mistreatment guidelines, and Title IX and equity reporting. Evaluate and recommend proactive policies, procedures, programs, and practices that impact faculty, staff, and students to support fair, equitable and progressive treatment. (8%)
  • Review of and assess behavior related issues raised in student evaluations, ISA, M2Q, the annual graduate questionnaire, and other sources as it relates to the AMS. (7%)
  • Serve as primary contact for the School of Medicine for the Accountability Management System portal to set strategies and liaise with the system vendor to address problems, suggest changes and navigate updates. Assess overall success of the system and its usability, language, and other components for recommended improvements. Provide training and onboarding to new users and user groups. (7%)

    Department: Regular contact with colleagues in the Dean's Office, SOM Human Resources, SOM Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Office of Faculty Affairs, Office for Graduate Education, Medical Education and other related spaces within the School of Medicine to triage and collaborate on issues.

    University: Regular contact with central Human Resources, Office of Equity, Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Engagement, and other related office within Case Western Reserve University to triage and collaborate on issues.

    External: Moderate contact with AMS vendor to address system issues.

    Students: Frequent contact with students regarding submitted reports.

     

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

     

    QUALIFICAITONS

    Experience: 3 or more years of related experience required. Experience in conflict resolution and mediation required.

    Education: Bachelor's degree in related specialization required. JD or a Master's degree or higher in Social Work, Behavioral Health, Public Health, Counseling, Higher Education, Teaching, or Leadership preferred.

  • Experience in analyzing and using data in digital and print media in explaining sensitive topics preferred
  • Experience in creating and nurturing healthful and positive environments, especially those oriented toward learning preferred

    This position is eligible for hybrid work arrangement up to two remote days per week at the discretion of the department. New employees may begin a hybrid schedule upon approval from the supervisor, successful completion of an orientation period and signing the remote work checklist certification form.
