ATTENTION:

The LGBTQ+ Pride Center in the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a LGBTQ+ Coordinator and Instructor.

The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2024.

JOB DETAILS:

The LGBTQ+ Coordinator will oversee the Pride Center's education, outreach and services in the development and implementation of programs and services that support sexual and gender diversity and act as an institutional resource on these themes. The selected candidate will provide leadership and direction in creating and maintaining a campus environment that supports, reflects, and affirms LGBTQ+ equity, inclusion and belonging for LGBTQ+ students, alumni, faculty, staff, families, friends, and allies. This position serves as a primary liaison to the University in creating and maintaining an inclusive and equitable campus environment for students (academic, residential, co-curricular, social), and foster community through intersectional approaches. The LGBTQ+ Coordinator will also teach two LGBTQ+ themed courses per academic year for the Department of Women's and Gender Studies.

The LGBTQ+ Coordinator provides guidance, direction and supervision to student assistants, intern and practicum students, and volunteers. This position reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for the Division of Student Affairs and for teaching related matters, the Chair of Women's and Gender Studies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree 
  • Three years of experience working with LGBTQ communities in higher education, social services, advocacy, or counseling, with an emphasis on developing and sustaining partnerships.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D./ABD in relevant field (e.g., gender studies, queer studies, student affairs, social work, psychology, counselor education). 
  • Experience in developing and providing educational programs in contexts related to diversity.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and social justice, a high ability to develop positive, collaborative relationships and have exceptional intergroup and multicultural competencies.
  • Understanding multiple and intersecting identities of students, faculty and staff related to diversity and applying this understanding to all aspects of programming, outreach, and collaboration.
  • Demonstrated success and experience teaching LGBTQ+-related issues.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in the following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training drills.
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Position/Job Responsibilities:

1. Provide leadership and direction for the Pride Center. Determine the scope and nature of the Center's services and develop strategic plans. Plan, develop and launch ongoing assessments and program evaluations of student learning outcomes. Make necessary modifications to respond to changing student and college needs.

2. Design, implement, and promote educational, cultural, and social programs and services offered through the Pride Center that fosters the academic success and personal growth and development of LGBTQ+ students. Provide consultation and support services, programming, training, and education regarding needs and concerns of LGBTQ+ students, staff, faculty, and alumni. Facilitate community building and outreach efforts, advising and support services.

3. Provide assistance to and advocacy for LGBTQ+ students through outreach programs, support, and community building. Create a program structure offering learning and engagement opportunities that increase awareness, equity, and inclusion, and foster community for LGBTQ+ students.

4. Develop and implement strategies to offer college-wide services to enhance the campus community's understanding and appreciation of LGBTQ+ people, cultures, and themes. Develop programs designed to inform and educate the campus community about LGBTQ+ people and themes, contributing to improved understanding, interpersonal relationships, and affirming campus climate. Implement educational workshops, programs, services, and policies to enhance and promote the campus community's inclusion of issues and concerns that affect LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff.

5. Provide assistance to students, faculty, staff and campus organizations on LGBTQ+ topics. Provide consultation regarding LGBTQ+ inclusion and LGBTQ+ themes to leadership of student organizations and faculty/staff advisors of student organizations.

6. Provide crisis intervention, management, support, and referral to appropriate campus and community resources. Serve as a resource on LGBTQ+ issues and concerns for the campus community including students, prospective students, staff, faculty, alumni, donors, and other campus and community programs as appropriate.

7.  Support students who have experienced discrimination or harassment based on sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, and assist them in understanding and considering reporting options. Work in collaboration with departments to develop and implement strategies to monitor and respond to issues and concerns affecting the quality of life for the LGBTQ+ community.

8. Recruit, select, train, and provide guidance, direction, and supervision to student employees and volunteer staff of the Center, and to fellows, interns, students in practicum placements.

9. Develop and provide consultation, professional development, training, education, technical assistance and support for staff and faculty, and offices across campus.

10. Develop and sustain successful collaborative initiatives, such as assisting LGBTQ+ students in their social and academic adjustment to campus life, and partnerships with other offices to advocate for equity in educational spaces at the intersections of multiple minoritized identities. Collaborate with academic and student affairs offices in recruitment and retention efforts of LGBTQ+ students.

11. Plan and coordinate college wide annual LGBTQ+ themed events such as Pride Week, the Queer Cultural Lecture and Film Series, the Women and Gender Lecture series, the annual drag show, Day of Silence, National Coming Out Day, new student orientation programs, "Out in the Workplace" series, Transgender Day of Visibility, etc.

12. Recommend curriculum materials, resources guides, exhibits, texts, articles, and other materials that enhance the inclusion of LGBTQ+ issues as requested in consultation with academic units. Encourage relevant scholarly dialogue in areas of LGBTQ Studies

13. Lead the budget planning process for the Center and administer its annual budget. Prepare and submit budget recommendations; monitor, verify, and oversee reconciliation of expenditure of budgeted funds. Manage center budget.

14. Serve as a member of the Division of Student Affairs Leadership Team attending bi-weekly meetings and leadership team retreats. Assist in setting strategic goals for the division and support divisional assessment efforts.

15. Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Teaching:

1. Commit 25% of time to successful teaching at the undergraduate level in the Department of Women's and Gender Studies (one course per semester for a total of two courses per academic year).

2. Develop and teach Introduction to LGBTQ+ Studies and an upper-division LGBTQ+ Studies-related course offered in rotation in the coordinator's area of expertise.  The upper-division course could include, but is not limited to interdisciplinary courses like Queer Popular Culture, Transgender Studies, LGBTQ+ Culture and Advocacy, Gender, Sexuality and Disability, etc.


3. Attend meetings in the Department of Women's and Gender Studies and serve as the department's liaison to Student Affairs and the Warhawk Connection Center.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting annual salary within a range of $60,000 - $68,000.
