Summary

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology seeks a part-time (50%) Lecturer I to fulfill teaching duties in one undergraduate lecture format course (MICRBIOL 405-Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease) in the Fall semester and to run one lab section of our undergraduate laboratory course (MICRBIOL 350)-Introduction to Medical Microbiology in the Winter semester.  

During the Fall semester, the candidate will attend classes and provide instruction in approximately 1/3 of the didactic lectures related to Virology with a focus on viral structure, entry, replication and pathogenesis as well as viral-host interactions.  

In the Winter, the candidate will run one lab section per week including introduction to the experimental methods, oversight during the laboratory and grading of laboratory notebooks. This laboratory course covers bacteriology primarily.

Responsibilities*

Fall 2024

  • Develop Virology section of course, MICRBIOL 405-Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease, including PowerPoint files for posting and reading materials
  • Deliver approximately 1/3 of the lectures in the course on the topic of Virology
  • Write and grade exams
  • Hold weekly office hours and attend review sessions

Winter 2025

  • Attend planning meetings for laboratory class MICRBIOL 350-Introduction to Medical Microbiology
  • Oversee the laboratory instruction of one class section (up to 20 students)
  • Provide introduction to the experimental protocols and assist students with questions during lab
  • Responsible for set up of materials, grading of notebooks and coordinating with other course instructors and teaching assistants
  • Be available to student who want to meet regarding class materials

Required Qualifications*

A PhD, MD or equivalent degree in Microbiology, Virology or a related field

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
