Who We Are

The Erb Institute is the business-sustainability partnership between the Ross School of Business and the School for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan. Founded in 1996, the institute is recognized as a global leader in working with companies, nonprofits and policy makers to improve the social, environmental, human-rights and diversity impact of business in Michigan, across the United States and around the globe.

We do that through teaching, research and business engagement. Our teaching platform includes the Erb Dual-Degree MBA/MS Program with approximately 90 graduate students; the Erb Fellows Program with approximately 110 undergraduate students; and custom executive trainings in collaboration with Ross Executive Education. Our research includes both the cutting-edge scholarly work of our Erb Faculty, as well as practical tools, frameworks and case studies to translate scholarly thought into management action. Business engagement focuses on collaboration with networks such as BSR and Sustainable Brands to be an active voice in the global dialogue on business sustainability, as well as our business roundtables that bring together leaders for pre-competitive collaboration on shared sustainability challenges and opportunities.

Looking forward, our five-year plan Erb Strategy 2022-26 adds a lens of social and environmental justice to our 25 years of work on business sustainability, and outlines three big & bold strategic goals: 1) Stakeholder governance and capitalism; 2) Global vision translated to local impact; and 3) Dramatic scaling-up of institute impact for our next 25 years!
