Summary

The University's Michigan Research and Discovery Scholars Program (MRADS) is one of the six Michigan Learning Communities (MLCs) on campus for which LSA is the administrative home and is dedicated to student success in undergraduate research. The mission of MRADS is to recruit, support, and retain students from diverse backgrounds and academic fields; to introduce them to the interdisciplinary nature of research and the excitement of discovery; to engage students in building a community based on mutual respect and affirmation of diversity; and to enhance students' undergraduate experience by providing them with academic and professional resources as well as engaging extracurricular opportunities to support their academic and personal growth. The MRADS director role includes an administrative staff position as well as the lecturer appointment. This position also carries the expectation of creative, innovative, and collaborative contribution to initiatives focused on undergraduate research inside of LSA and across the U-M campus. The staff appointment effort is 100% year-round and contains three roles: 1) administrative leadership, 2) teaching, and 3) work on LSA and cross-campus initiatives. The staff appointment effort will be reduced to accommodate the teaching portion of the position (LEO Adjunct Lecturer) during those times so that the total appointment effort of these two interdependent roles remains at 100%.  This academic/administrative leadership position reports to the Office of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education in LSA the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, with a direct reporting line to the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education.

Regular teaching in the MRADS program is integral to the directorship and the director will teach one 1-credit course during the fall term in addition to the administrative duties associated with the Director position Active collaboration with the university's academic units to ensure broad faculty involvement in these academic offerings is also integral to the role. The MRADS course is housed within the Applied Liberal Arts (ALA) division of the College.

Responsibilities*

The candidate will be expected to provide classroom instruction to undergraduate students in an interdisciplinary liberal arts program. Lecturers are expected to attend course meetings, hold office hours, and handle routine matters related to instruction. Lecturers are also strongly encouraged to hire and supervise graduate student instructors who may provide instructional support in and outside the classroom.

Required Qualifications*

The position requires an advanced degree, preferably Ph.D. or Ed.D. or equivalent degree, in a STEM or STEM-related field or higher education, along with experience working in academic research, the ability to learn quickly and prioritize multiple demands, experience working with a diverse student population, and a demonstrated interest in student retention and academic success. The candidate must have experience with teaching courses inclusive of culturally, economically and ethnically diverse populations and demonstrated experience using dialogic pedagogy. Substantial experience in experimental and experiential teaching is desired.

The selection criteria used for this search is based on how the applicant's education and experience meets the required minimum qualifications for the position.  Excellence in teaching and instruction will be the principal criteria used to select the successful candidate.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
