Position Summary/Purpose of Position: | The Legal Coordinator provides administrative and legal support services to all attorneys and paralegals in the Office of General Counsel (OGC), the in-house office that provides legal support and advice to the University of Maryland, College Park. The breadth of OGC’s legal practice requires the Legal Coordinator to be capable and willing to support OGC and its attorneys and paralegals in a wide range of legal, operational, and administrative matters, including but not limited to: administrative tasks; litigation/adversarial matters; administrative hearings; public information requests; and human resources, corporate, transactional, real estate, and policy matters. The Legal Coordinator plays a pivotal role in keeping OGC functioning efficiently by coordinating administrative functions, maintaining files and a matter-management system, and collaborating with other business and academic units across the University. In addition to handling administrative functions, the Legal Coordinator works under attorney supervision to perform some or all of the following duties: review, edit, and draft legal documents and communications; perform legal and factual research; review, prepare, and maintain documents, exhibits, and presentations; analyze, preserve and maintain evidence; monitor and update internal tracking processes; and communicate and interact with clients, outside counsel, and third parties, including other government units. The Legal Coordinator plays a support role in handling the University’s responses to internal and external information requests, such as Public Information Act (PIA) requests, subpoenas, or other court legal orders; the Employee Grievance Hearing and Public Safety Denial of Access appeal processes; and similar matters handled by OGC. The Legal Coordinator works collaboratively with OGC’s Executive Assistant(s) to provide administrative support for OGC and its attorneys and paralegals as needed, which may include scheduling, coordinating and tracking grievances, denials of access, and similar matters; supporting office operations and information management; and maintaining filing systems. |
