Position Summary Information


Primary Purpose
The Legal Assistant will be part of the clinic staff at the Immigration Law Clinic at McGeorge Law School. Their primary responsibilities will include preparing and finalizing applications for immigration benefits under the supervision of an attorney. The Legal Assistant will help with client and case file management. The position will require frequent communication with clients, clinic law students, and clinic attorneys.
Essential Functions
Client Services:
  • Work directly with staff in the collection of information and documents for clients’ cases.
  • Assess prospective clients (over the phone and in-person) for service eligibility and assist with intake, information collection, and appointment scheduling, including administering reminder calls.
  • Provide interpretation and translation services for clients.
  • Assist attorneys and students in preparing, finalizing, and submitting applications for submission to USCIS, the Immigration Court and Superior Court.
  • Assist with prompt filing and data entry of all correspondence from the government and communicate pertinent information to the appropriate client and/or responsible attorney and relevant certified law student.
  • Assist in file management and organization including physical files and online case file (CLIO).
  • Assist attorneys in client communications as required.
  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of clinic workshops including but not limited to naturalization and DACA renewal workshops.

  • Administration:

  • Record client information in the Clinic case management system (CLIO) and assist in maintaining organized case files.
  • Assist with placement, training, and supervision of interns and other volunteers.
  • Attend meetings as necessary with community partners.
  • Assist Clinic with grant data collection and documentation.
  • Identify processes and procedures to improve and implement solutions.
  • Revise and generate flyers for workshops and events.
  • Maintain adequate office supplies for the department and coordinate orders when necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • High School Diploma.
    • Three (3) years or related experience.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Three (3) years of experience working in a law firm, non-profit, or similar setting.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact regularly with both the campus community and the public.
    • Proficient in Spanish.
    • Ability to multi-task, organize resources and establish priorities in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
    • Intermediate to advanced skills in Word WordPerfect, Excel and PowerPoint.
    • Familiarity with case management software.
    • Interest in working with students and clients from diverse backgrounds in law school clinic setting.
    • Interest in continued education on immigration law and processes.
    • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
    • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
    • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.
