Job Description Summary
The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, Professional Track faculty appointment at the rank of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer with an expertise in Medical Anthropology and Global Health to begin in August 2024. We seek a scholar with a Ph.D. in Anthropology to teach courses for the University’s new interdisciplinary Global Health major. Candidates should demonstrate a strong background knowledge of the structural dimensions of global health governance and policy from an anthropological perspective. Additionally, we desire a colleague whose teaching and research are grounded in publicly engaged, justice oriented approaches to addressing health inequalities. We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate a commitment to decolonial/postcolonial and/or feminist/queer approaches to classroom instruction. Candidates whose interests expand our current expertise are especially encouraged to apply.
Minimum Qualifications
Requirements for the position include: a Ph.D. in Anthropology (degree in hand by June 2024); experience as instructor of record for Medical Anthropology courses at the college/university level; evidence of excellence in teaching and dedication to undergraduate education; a demonstrated commitment to working with students and groups from underrepresented backgrounds; and the ability to articulate how their pedagogy contributes to principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. The initial appointment will be for 1 year, with the possibility of renewal on a 3-5 year schedule thereafter. The position carries a 3-3 teaching load. The two Anthropology courses required for the new major, Introduction to Medical Anthropology and Global Health (ANTH 210) and Method and Theory in Medical Anthropology and Global Health (ANTH 310), will be the core teaching responsibility of this position each semester. The remainder of the workload will be devoted to teaching other related courses in the Anthropology Department, service activities such as mentoring and advising students, and serving on departmental committees. This position will also serve as a liaison between the Department of Anthropology in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and the new Department of Global, Environmental, and Occupational Health in the School of Public Health, academic home of the Global Health major. Professional track faculty are eligible for promotion in the teaching, research, or clinical track, based on hiring title. Professional track faculty are not eligible for tenure. University of Maryland offers all full-time faculty competitive employee benefits, including tuition remission.
Background Checks: Offers of employment are contingent on completion of a background check. Information reported by the background check will not automatically disqualify you from employment.
