The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maine invites qualified applications for a full-time Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Principal Lecturer position with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2024 or earlier. 

 

This is a 100% teaching position in mechanical engineering that also requires active engagement in service to the University, the State, and the profession. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach mainly undergraduate courses, advise and mentor undergraduate students, participate in service activities, and demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The appointment is for the academic year (nine months) with opportunities for teaching summer courses for additional compensation. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has an ABET-accredited BS program as well as MS and PhD degree programs. In addition to the undergraduate concentration in Aerospace, the Department offers graduate concentrations in Aerospace, Offshore Wind Energy, Robotics & Mechatronics, and Smart Manufacturing. Faculty also teach courses that support interdisciplinary minors in several areas including Robotics and Renewable Energy Engineering, as well as a certificate in Composite Materials and Structures. The faculty are very active in research and scholarly pursuits with over $7M in new awards in FY23. The Department is housed in the brand-new Ferland Engineering Education and Design Center, a 115,000 sf, $78-million state-of-the-art teaching and laboratory facility on the UMaine campus in Orono.

 

The faculty in mechanical engineering have active collaborations with other academic units as well as a number of research centers, including Advanced Structures and Composites Center, Frontier Institute for Research in Sensor Technologies, Climate Change Institute, and Advanced Manufacturing Center.

 

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is part of the Maine College of Engineering and Computing (MCEC), which is a statewide, integrated solution to bring together the natural synergies of all engineering disciplines with computing and provide the technical workforce and innovations that are critical to moving our economy forward. MCEC includes the College of Engineering and School of Computing and Information Science at UMaine, the Department of Engineering at the University of Southern Maine (USM), with other collaborators to include the Department of Computer Science at USM and computing programs at University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) and other campuses within the University of Maine System.

Required:

  • A BS and an MS in mechanical engineering or a closely related field
  • Evidence of a strong potential for effective teaching, and capability to develop and teach courses in mechanical engineering mainly at the undergraduate level
  • Excellent communication skills and teamwork ability

Preferred:

  • A PhD in mechanical engineering or a closely related field
  • Experience in engineering education and effective pedagogy
  • Experience with mentoring students and guiding team projects
  • Experience in computer modeling and/or experimental techniques
  • Experience with instrumentation and data acquisition systems
  • Industrial experience in engineering
