Position Description:

The Department of Health and Human Physiology at the University of Iowa invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track Lecturer position teaching undergraduate courses in the Human Physiology and Exercise Science degree programs with a start date in January 2024 (preferred) or August 2024. The initial appointment period for this position is two semesters with the possibility of extension for a total of three years; the position is renewable thereafter in three-year increments. Applications are sought from candidates with demonstrated evidence of outstanding teaching in the following areas: human anatomy, human physiology, and exercise physiology. 


Candidates with a PhD and 6+ years of relevant collegiate teaching experience may be considered at the rank of Associate Professor of Instruction. 


University and Department


The University of Iowa is one of the nation's premier public research universities with 33,564 students from 114 countries and all 50 states. The Department of Health and Human Physiology (HHP) is a relatively new department formed in 2010 by combining three pre-existing departments (Integrative Physiology, Health and Sport Studies, and Leisure Studies). Since its inception, HHP has observed a 527% increase in undergraduate student enrollment and is now the largest undergraduate program on the University of Iowa campus with over 2200 undergraduate students. The department offers six undergraduate majors: BS in Exercise Science, BS in Human Physiology, BA in Health Studies, BS in Health Promotion, BS in Therapeutic Recreation, and a BS in Sport and Recreation Management.

Location is approximately 3 hours by car from Chicago, and 4-5 hours from St. Louis, Minneapolis, Omaha, and Kansas City. Iowa City is within 20 minutes of the Eastern Iowa airport in Cedar Rapids and 1 hour drive to the Quad Cities International Airport in Moline, IL. Education Requirement:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in exercise physiology, human anatomy, human physiology, kinesiology, exercise science, applied physiology, or related field completed prior to the start date in August 2024.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated effectiveness teaching as a primary instructor in human anatomy, human physiology, and/or exercise physiology.

  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • PhD in exercise physiology, human anatomy, human physiology, kinesiology, exercise science, applied physiology, or related field is preferred.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness teaching in large enrollment courses at the collegiate level.

  • Experience teaching in an online format.

  • Previous supervision of graduate teaching assistants or other instructors.

  • Potential for excellence in teaching biomechanics, and/or motor control at the collegiate level.

  • Previous ‘laboratory’ teaching experience at the collegiate level in two or more of the following areas: human anatomy, human physiology, exercise physiology, exercise testing, biomechanics, or motor control.

  • Demonstrated experience with undergraduate course design and/or development and support of curricular innovation.

  • Regular participation in discipline-appropriate professional societies and/or experience with other types of undergraduate science education initiatives.
