The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) and Nebraska Extension are inviting applications for a lecturer position in Animal Science. This 12-month, non-tenure track position is apportioned as 60% teaching and 40% extension. This position reports to the head of the Department of Animal Science. The Livestock Evaluation and Youth Education position will contribute to the integrated extension and teaching land-grant mission of the home unit and IANR as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy.

We are seeking an innovative and dynamic individual with leadership skills to build upon our nationally recognized programs in food animal science. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is located in one of the largest cattle-feeding states in the world, along with extensive cow-calf and backgrounding/stocker cattle production; expanding swine, dairy, and poultry industries; and the number one state in the U.S. for red meat production. The state also benefits from a high concentration of allied industries and services including meat processors, grain processors and feed manufacturers, pharmaceutical and biological manufacturers, technology development and support, and world-class consultants in feedlot nutrition. Existing and potential programs at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln offer opportunities for unique collaborations in the diverse aspects of food animal production. We are looking for individuals who will lead dynamic and cutting-edge programming that builds relationships between the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) and our food animal stakeholders, develops knowledge and leadership skills in our increasingly diverse undergraduate students, and excites students about career opportunities in food animal agriculture.
Collaborations of these positions within IANR and across the state will result in expected outcomes including, but not limited to, enhanced in-state, out-of-state, and transfer student enrollment and retention; greater diversity of undergraduate students; improved University of Nebraska and CASNR brand awareness; development of student career readiness skills including critical thinking, leadership, teamwork, confidence, and communication; enhanced hands-on and experiential learning opportunities; a greater number of relevant internship opportunities; highly effective 4-H Livestock programs that help youth develop key skills in food animal production; strengthened 4-H Extension Educator capacity to manage 4-H livestock programs; adult 4-H leader development; and enhanced relationships with potential students, parents, producers, livestock organizations, commodity groups, and meat processors in the state and region. These positions will assist with statewide livestock programs, including planning, policy management, and coordination of the Nebraska State Fair, the Premier Animal Science Event (PASE), AKSARBEN, and other livestock events. This position will be expected to collaborate to deliver science-based information to enhance understanding of the value of phenotype to sustainability of live animal and meat production in integrated food animal production systems.
This position will develop and deliver a proactive animal science educational program of excellence with evidence of program impact and student success. Primary program assignments include:
  • Develop and teach innovative courses related to livestock evaluation using the latest science-based assessment tools available. Courses could include: Animal Science 300B, Principles of Livestock Evaluation and Judging; Animal Science 400B, Advanced Livestock Evaluation and Judging; and Animal Science 300D, Principles of Meat Animal Evaluation (co-taught)
  • Teach ASCI 100L, Fundamentals of Animal Biology and Industry Lab, and additional courses consistent with departmental needs and the successful applicant’s expertise.
  • Coach the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Livestock Judging Team and co-coach the Meat Animal Evaluation Team.
  • Advise undergraduate students and student organizations.
  • Recruit students for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
  • Provide strong state-wide leadership focused on comprehensive educational programs of excellence in youth-related animal science, including incorporating scientific principles into livestock project selection and animal management.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement engaging youth livestock evaluation events, educational camps and clinics, and educational materials.
  • Enhance the department’s outreach and Extension mission by expanding youth engagement, providing leadership through recruitment opportunities for the department, and collaborating with the IANR Science Literacy community to help learners analyze complex challenges and make science-informed decisions.
  • Actively participate in fundraising efforts to support the UNL Livestock Judging and Meat Animal Evaluation Teams.
  • Lead and contribute value to high-performing Extension programming teams and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of Extension specialists/educators, research scientists, and others to evaluate and deliver effective, integrated livestock evaluation programs.


In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in animal science or a closely related field. Master’s degree must be completed by the start date.
  • Knowledge and experience in livestock management and animal husbandry.
  • Experience teaching animal science-related coursework.
  • Ability to effectively coach and enhance student success through livestock and meat evaluation activities.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work in a diverse team atmosphere.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in animal science, meat science, food science, or a closely related field with an emphasis on beef or pork production.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and learning and capability to develop innovative, effective methods of teaching undergraduate courses.
  • Previous experience as a livestock evaluation or meat animal evaluation coach.
  • Ability to reach youth audiences through creative outreach efforts.
