The Department of Music at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga ( UTC) seeks applicants to fill a full time Lecturer position in Woodwinds, with additional duties in teaching in the Musicianship Skills area (Music Theory) beginning August 1, 2024.

We seek candidates who have strong potential for effectiveness in recruiting new students and teaching a woodwind instrument (Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, or Double reed). Excellence as a performer and willingness to continue performing is also expected. Additional duties may include first and second semester courses in Musicianship skills (an approach to Music Theory). Preference will be given to applicants who have experience teaching a woodwind instrument.

Required qualifications include:

• Ph.D., DMA, or similar terminal degree in Music with a focus on a Woodwind instrument. Individuals who are all-but-dissertation (ABD) will be considered.
• Commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching
• Ability to effectively recruit students for UTC Music from high schools and possibly home school associations in Tennessee and north Georgia
• Ability to represent UTC Music well at music festivals, workshops, and/or other events involving high school musicians and/or their music teachers
• Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues
• Demonstrated potential for effective integration of technology into instruction as appropriate.

• Statement of teaching experience and philosophy,
• An updated curriculum vitae,
• All unofficial transcripts.
• Names, titles, and email addresses for three (3) references, from which UTC will request confidential letters of recommendation. At least one of these references must be able to comment on teaching ability.

About us: The Department of Music at UTC currently has 120 Music Majors and numerous Music Minors. The Music Faculty includes members with national profiles, who routinely perform, write articles for respected music publications, give invited presentations at other institutions and conferences, and serve as adjudicators and clinicians. Degrees offered include:

• Music Therapy, a vibrant program now in its fifth year that already has nearly 40 majors;
• Instrumental Music Education, a program that has recently had some useful curriculum revisions, and which is supported by Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, two Jazz bands, and a Percussion Ensemble;
• Vocal/Choral Music Education, a program that is supported by ensembles for treble voices, male voices, the Chattanooga Singers mixed chorus, the Chamber Singers, an auditioned mixed chorus, the Singing Mocs, an auditioned a cappela ensemble styled after the Pentatonix, and the Guthry Quartet, a scholarship-based men’s quartet;
• Music Performance;
• Piano Performance and Pedagogy;
• Composition;
• The Bachelor of Arts in Music, which offers a great deal of flexibility of musical style, some special courses, and an internship.
