Basic Function
California Lutheran University (Cal Lutheran) seeks to hire a broadly trained Biologist at the Lecturer level (non-tenure track), starting in the Fall of 2023.
Successful candidates will have a MS (Ph.D. preferred) in biology and provide evidence of excellence in teaching and laboratory skills. It is essential that interested candidates possess the ability or potential to teach, advise, and supervise undergraduate student Departmental Assistants. A successful candidate is expected to develop, teach and coordinate lower division laboratory courses specifically lower division major’s laboratory courses (Biological Experimentation I and II). In addition, candidates will have the opportunity to develop new laboratory assignments and exercises that align with the specific inquiry-based pedagogy of the course. The successful candidate will be involved with teaching five laboratory sections per semester, coordinating and organizing multiple sections and communicating with adjuncts who also teach the same course.
The Biology Department at Cal Lutheran has excellent resources for engaging students in the process of scientific discovery. Cal Lutheran has recently built a new, 47,000 square foot joint-sciences building with state-of-the-art laboratory spaces. We offer an inquiry-based curriculum that through smaller class sizes emphasizes active learning in order to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in elite graduate programs and prepare for careers in industry or academia.
Under the direction of the Dean and Department Chair, the Lecturer is responsible for providing academic instruction to students for the assigned undergraduate courses.
Representative Duties
• Provide academic instruction to students through lecture, or lab.
• Maintain current, accurate records of course enrollment, attendance, student academic progress, course curriculum; prepare and submit grades, data, and reports related to course and student progress in a timely manner.
• Provide a course syllabus to students in each class within the first week of the class, as outlined in the faculty handbook.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Of
• Knowledge and incorporation of multiple learning modalities and teaching techniques to best address an array of learning styles;
• Extensive experience and success working with a diverse student population, including students from historically underserved groups and first generation students, as well as students with documented learning disabilities;
• Experience in academic advising.
• Current theory and practice within the subject discipline

Minimum Qualifications
A minimum of a Masters degree in Biology
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. preferred in biology and provide evidence of excellence in teaching and laboratory skills
