Job Description

The Department of English at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) invites applicants for a Lecturer II/Teaching Assistant Professor position in literature to begin July 1, 2024. This is a 9-month, non-tenure-track, continuing position in which faculty are eligible for promotion and in which the predominant responsibility is teaching. We are seeking candidates with the ability to teach required courses in the literature track of the English major as well as courses that support associated majors (such as Pack Teach, a dual-degree program in Secondary Education and English). We seek candidates to teach our foundation courses: Writing About Literature (298) and Introduction to Literary Theory and Criticism (303). Applicants are also expected to be able to teach courses offered by the Core Humanities Program, especially CH 203: American Experiences and Constitutional Change as well as upper-division courses in American Literature, especially Ethnic Literature(s). The position carries a 4/4 teaching load with potential course release opportunities for academic advisement, assessment, curriculum development, and other administrative duties. There are also opportunities for off-term teaching for additional compensation.

The literature emphasis trains students to think and write critically through rigorous instruction and engagement with issues of public concern, preparing them for careers in law, project management, publishing, and education. The literature emphasis offers courses in British and U.S. literature, as well as global literatures in English. It focuses on a range of historical periods, individual authors, movements, themes, and genres, and it stresses a range of theoretical methods and disciplinary approaches. Many of our course’s center on diverse and underrepresented literatures in English. Faculty members in the department teach in a variety of fields, including the literature of U.S. writers of color, film, early modern British literature, global modernism, British literature from the early modern to the contemporary, and global Anglophone literatures.

Teaching Assistant Professor – Terminal Degree and related experience

Candidates must possess experience working with diverse and underrepresented students at the college level.

Successful candidates must demonstrate an ability to collaborate with others on curriculum design and implementation while supporting the university’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and social justice.

Department Information

The Department of English, housed in the College of Liberal Arts, offers a diverse range of fields of study including literature, language and linguistics, professional and public writing, and creative writing. We also offer a minor in cinema and media studies. Our graduate programs include PhD concentrations in literature and Rhetoric & Writing Studies, an MFA in creative writing, and MA degrees in literature, RWS, and Public Engagement. The department houses the Core Writing program for the university and maintains close relationships with other core and affiliate programs including Core Humanities and the Department of Gender, Race, and Identity Studies.
