Lecturer (FWS)

The Department of Literatures in English  at Cornell University invites applications for two lecturers to teach undergraduate writing beginning academic year 2024-25. This is a three-year term, with renewal based on performance and the needs of the department.

As part of the university-wide First-Year Writing Seminars program administered by the

John S. Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines

, the department offers a wide range of First-Year Writing Seminars in literature, film, and media; nature, the environment, and climate change; culture, politics, and identity; and in community engagement. These writing seminars serve the entire undergraduate population of Cornell University. As such, candidates should demonstrate experience teaching undergraduate writing to students from diverse backgrounds and in diverse fields of study.

The successful candidates will teach a full-time course load of 3 courses per semester. These courses will primarily be FWS courses with the opportunity to teach one non-FWS 2000-level literature course each spring semester, to be determined based on the lecturer’s experience and interests along with the department’s curricular needs. During some semesters, the lecturer may serve as course leader—supervising FWS courses taught by graduate student instructors and temporary lecturers—as the equivalent of one course.

Required qualifications are a PhD in English language and literature or similar literary field and experience teaching writing and literature at the undergraduate level. Candidates should have experience developing syllabi and teaching as the instructor of record. Preferred qualifications are experience or demonstrated ability in supervising graduate student instructors and/or contributing to pedagogical training for graduate students.

We ask applicants for all faculty positions to share their experiences and/or approaches (past, current, or future) to fostering learning, research, service, and/or outreach in a diverse community. Applicants may choose to submit a stand-alone statement or embed the information in other parts of their application materials.

This is a full-time, benefits eligible position beginning July 1, 2024. Visa sponsorship and relocation support are not available for this position. Lecturers must teach in person on Cornell’s Ithaca campus.
